What are some good "magical realism" books that are Veeky Forums approved? Classic or contemporary, this is a genre I really want to read more of.

Not a novel though.
Gogol
Garcia Marquez and Allende, as it says
Borges for proto-magreal
Midnight's Children
I'll have to chime in with Fowle's The Magus.
dont read Isabel Allende
Read 100 years of Solitude by Garcia Marquez, and Pedro Paramo by Rulfo.
Borges want a magic realism writer, that wikipedia article is wrong.
AVOID ISABEL ALLENDE

flol
cortazar - bestiario
The Swan Book - Alexis Wright
Borges may be a bit more on the fantastic end of magical realism, but I still think he qualifies as such – why do you object it?
The Obscene Bird of Night by José Donoso
Heliopolis, Gläserne Bienen, Eumeswill and Auf den Mamorklippen by Ernst Jünger
Yeah why?
I really don´t know anything about her aside from having sold a lot of books. Is she that bad?
100 years and Pedro Paramo are probably the pinnacles of magical realism. Highly recommended
Little, Big by John Crowley
Murakami ofc
Salman Rushdie is among my favourite writers. For an introduction, Midnights Children is somewhat large compared to some of the others recommended on this list, but is a fantastic read, though I don't think it's quite as good as some of his later works.
The Kingdom of this World by Alejo Carpentier
Just finished Beloved. It blends magical realism with the gothic in a US slave narrative. It was okay.
>wetback fairy tales
