Why is SETI and other scientists looking for alien signals in space assuming that other advanced civilizations are using radio waves to communicate? Isn't it more likely they would use some other more effective way to communicate?

>Isn't it more likely they would use some other more effective way to communicate?
Such as?

How the fuck would I know? Lasers?

It's not so much that they would use radio signals to communicate. The belief is that advanced civilizations likely, at some point in their rise, bleed radio waves (like we do). So, we are looking for these signatures that indicate intelligent life, whether they are explicitly trying to communicate for us or not.

Maybe if you know so little you can't even suggest one possible alternative maybe you should consider that hundreds of highly specialized scientists in the field might know better than you what to look for

Isnt it like that we've already gone beyond peak radiowaves?

What is earth's radiowave signature? Do we output anything detectable? Wouldn't any planet that supports life require a strong magnetic field to protect it from the harsh radiation of space/its sun and completely mask radio signals?

If smoke signals is all you know, you look for smoke signals.

Civilizations can only communicate through EM radiation (in theory, with gravitational waves too, but very unlikely). High energy radiation gets absorbed by shit, so radio waves are the only thing that's left.

>Why is SETI and other scientists looking for alien signals in space

Because they don't know that SIGNAL ATTENUATION IS A FUCKING BITCH.

>Do we output anything detectable?

No. You'd need to harness the power of the sun to send signals into space far enough to have another civilization pick it up. The best you can hope for is to turn the sun into a giant signal lamp using some sort of orbiting system that blocks the light to part of the galaxy in the direction you want to "talk" to someone. Hopefully, someone is looking at the sky and wondering why there's a blinking star, who also happens to have the tech to do the same thing.

But dat lag time in conversation....

TV transmitters are visible to 1 ly but we do emit occasional signals visible to 1000 ly

You misunderstand what attenuation is.

Wait so just how hard is interstellar radio detection?

Does earth have a 'radio bubble' from TV and all that, that could be detected in nearby star system, or is it really just a contrive things to made up to explain alien speaking English?

Daily Reminder for [current day] :

Donating CPU cycles to SETI is a waste.

Imagine what SETI would have been like if it had been established before the time we even knew radio waves existed... hmm

Really makes you think

user, the victorians tried using mirrors.

You can detect that there is something artificial on Earth from about 1 ly away with our current technology. The nearest star is about 4 ly iirc.

>other more effective way to communicate

its hard to look for something you don't know exists. (we have no idea how it would be possible to send any signal faster than electromagnetic radiation (radio waves))

don't be so harsh on him, he is just an undergrad

Better question: why would anyone try to find intelligent life on another planet when we can't even find any here on Earth?

Gamma is the all caps of intergalactic interapecies communication

finding the radio signals would be 10 000000 times easier if we didnt create our own harrasment to the equipment reading these things. i mean, if there were no signals leaving earth, we could catch em' all.

Kek

Scientists don't know shit
They just want money to sit in the middle of no where and detach from life.
Government funding was a mistake.

Only possible methods are electromagnetic waves or gravitational waves, but to produce them and detect them wouldn't be profitable, and they would achieve the same results EM provide.

Right so no one on alpha Centauri is going to be watching I love Lucy. The signal is just too weak.

So there is much radio noise you're saying?

So any society able to detect radio signals will likely be negating their own ability to detect others.

Stupid irony.

anti gravity infront of a sun, redirecting sunlight for burst of time if that is possible. like a morse code
