B/c derived algebraic geometry isn't helpful for poker.

People who study pure math are no better than underwater basket weaving majors

I study mathematical physics.

Then why does every scientific field rely on math?

Muh nigga. Also homotpical algebraic geometry is pretty dank.

because I'm too late and every pure math pleb worth his memes knows about competitive poker already

Because I don't care about money. I want to make a difference.

>applied math

Because you need good memory and mental math as well. Also social skills.

I'm actually decent at poker, I just haven't ever played for real money. Thinking about doing the poker tournaments at my local casino this summer though.

Veeky Forums plays poker

My professor used to play poker because she knows a lot about statistics. She's good.

because there's a big time investment in order to get good enough and play enough to make serious money and there is no guarantee that you will be good enough to be profitable enough that it can be a successful full time career.
and you'd need to be really good and make a lot of money for it to be worth while

image in you spent a long time getting good at poker and building up your bank roll and finally you had enough to stable-ly make say 80000 a year.

you would still be more successful than the vast majority of poker players, but what kind of life would you lead? spending all day in front of a computer with 6 games going on at once?
no coworkers, no work social life.
or spending your time travelling to depressing casinos or private games every week.

>no coworker, no work social life
>implying this is any different from your average Veeky Forums poster

The combinatorics of poker is fascinating, but in practice, no one can make the necessary computations in real time to figure out all the relevant conditional probabilities that would help you. Understanding it definitely helps, but psychological warfare is far more important when actually playing.

>tfw old high school math teacher spent an entire year showing us how to win at card games.

Now that's what I call applied math, I haven't lost a single game of cards since I graduated.

You've got to know when to hold 'em
Know when to fold 'em
Know when to walk away
And know when to run
You never count your money
When you're sittin' at the table
There'll be time enough for countin'
When the dealin's done

Then you are no better than underwater basket weaving majors.

Because precisely due to its legality, casinos know to look for that shit and break the legs of the people who try it a time too many, or worse.

OP is talking about poker, not blackjack.
And either way, card counting in blackjack will just get you banned from the casino and nothing else..
