The problem with states, economics and politics is that they do not follow simplistic linear models. There are huge amounts of variables with highly nonlinear effects, many of which are hidden. Everyone goes through a socialist phase - it sounds so nice on paper. Except it does not work. Do you really thing no one thought of redistributing wealth before Marx? Furthermore, the bigger the state, the harder it is.

If we are going to live past scarcity then what would you choose?

The flight plan of Dragon 2 is as follows; Dragon 2 will be launched by Falcon Heavy and boosted directly onto a Moon intercept trajectory, which will have the capsule skim several hundred kilometers away from the surface of the Moon, then be slingshot by the Moon's gravity+vector motion onto a free-return trajectory, where the capsule will continue up away from Earth past the Moon for a short while, then will reach apoapsis and begin falling back towards Earth, hitting the upper atmosphere and using the capsules aerodynamic lift to steer and bleed off speed until it has slowed to subsonic speeds and can deploy parachutes, or is the mission is more ambitious, attempt propulsive landing with the Superdraco engines. Course corrections throughout the mission will be performed by the much smaller Draco maneuvering thrusters on the capsule, following calculations determined by the capsules computers reading the telemetry data and adjusting to keep things on the right flight plan.

The whole trip will last about a week.

Have they said that? I think this will likely cost the center stage as well.

My point was that even in the overly pessimitic cost estimate I laid out the whole mission wouldn't cost more than a couple hundred million dollars, which is already dirt cheap when it comes to a manned Moon flyby. A Falcon Heavy has a stated price of only $90 million, and I doubt Dragon 2 will end up costing more than $20 million. Even if we leave the price of everything else as $10 million, the total price would drop to just $120 million or $60 million apiece.

That's without any reuse of the cores.
