I've always been fond of The Rime of the Ancient Mariner and The Inchcape Rock. I suspect this may not be because of any inherent superiority, but because I used to walk along the beach with my granddad way back when, and he would recite them from memory as we went.

Had we gone hiking in the hills together rather than along the sea shore, I imagine he would have recited different poems for me -- he knew dozens, if not hundreds of them -- and I would have different taste in poetry.

The Tyger

It was not part of their blood,
It came to them very late,
With long arrears to make good,
When the Saxon began to hate.

They were not easily moved,
They were icy -- willing to wait
Till every count should be proved,
Ere the Saxon began to hate.

Their voices were even and low.
Their eyes were level and straight.
There was neither sign nor show
When the Saxon began to hate.

It was not preached to the crowd.
It was not taught by the state.
No man spoke it aloud
When the Saxon began to hate.

It was not suddently bred.
It will not swiftly abate.
Through the chilled years ahead,
When Time shall count from the date
That the Saxon began to hate.

Well done, you found one worse than The Raven. That's really the lowest point of Kipling's doggerel period.

All we have of freedom, all we use or know—
This our fathers bought for us long and long ago.

Ancient Right unnoticed as the breath we draw—
Leave to live by no man's leave, underneath the Law.

Lance and torch and tumult, steel and grey-goose wing
Wrenched it, inch and ell and all, slowly from the King.

Till our fathers 'stablished, after bloody years,
How our King is one with us, first among his peers.

So they bought us freedom—not at little cost
Wherefore must we watch the King, lest our gain be lost,

Over all things certain, this is sure indeed,
Suffer not the old King: for we know the breed.

So many poems are better than The Raven. Poe was a weak poet and only a handful of them were decent.

The word poetry was literally named after him for a reason dumbass.

Nearly all heavily anthologized poems are better, and about 1 million non-anthologized poems are better than the Raven.

I like poe, but his poetry is bad.

>poetry

late Middle English: from medieval Latin poetria, from Latin poeta ‘poet.’ In early use the word sometimes referred to creative literature in general.

I'm living vicariously through your beautiful memory. Thanks for sharing.

>thinking eytmemeology proves anything

nah it's called Poe-try because Poe tried it... and failed.

Wow I really dislike that

this was a really funny post, good job

solid effort, usually better to just let a joke stand though

There are better poems, yes, but Poe was still a great poet and writer. Just because he's sort of mainstream doesn't negate the quality of his work.

Daily reminder that Veeky Forums only hates Poe because he is on the American public school curriculum and since everyone knows about him he doesn't give their pathetic status-anxiety minds a dopamine hit. None of these mouth-breathing faggots have a rational or studied reason for disliking Poe, and if he had achieved obscurity they would literally be worshiping him and his meme life right now.

I promise to shitpost according to your high quality standards in future Mr Joke Inspector Sir.
