Why is Hegel the most misinterpreted philosopher of all time?

Why is Hegel the most misinterpreted philosopher of all time?

Even academics and 'professional philosophers' don't even read the guy and repeat garbage aphorisms about 'thesis antithesis synthesis' and conflate his absolute idealism with schelling's objective idealism (or more commonly, just subjective idealism)

I would even go as far to say that the vast majority of thinkers that came after him completely misapprehend key aspects of his thought and fail to grasp the essence of Hegelian philosophy (And in particular Hegel's critique of Kantian thought)

Don't try to discuss Hegel on Veeky Forums, waste of time.

This, Hegel was a fraudulant hack anyway.

The people who argue that Hegel was a hack are the same people that attack philosophers on the basis that they're "too hard to read"

It's the logical equivalent of a teenager hating maths because they're shit at it

Not the same thing.

Philosophy for the "Dad, you just don't understand the artistic depth of my animes" crowd.

Name 1 person who philosophically overcame Hegelian thought

Als Hegel auf dem Totenbette lag, sagte er: ‚Nur einer hat mich verstanden’, aber gleich darauf fügte er verdrießlich hinzu: ‚Und der hat mich auch nicht verstanden’.“

>Fan fiction brought to you by Harry Heine

"Hegel, installed from above, by the powers that be, as the certified Great Philosopher, was a flat-headed, insipid, nauseating, illiterate charlatan who reached the pinnacle of audacity in scribbling together and dishing up the craziest mystifying nonsense. This nonsense has been noisily proclaimed as immortal wisdom by mercenary followers and readily accepted as such by all fools, who thus joined into as perfect a chorus of admiration as had ever been heard before. The extensive field of spiritual influence with which Hegel was furnished by those in power has enabled him to achieve the intellectual corruption of an whole generation."
- The World as Will and Idea, vol. 2 (1844)

"But the height of audacity in serving up pure nonsense, in stringing together senseless and extravagant mazes of words, such as had previously been known only in madhouses, was finally reached in Hegel, and became the instrument of the most barefaced general mystification that has ever taken place, with a result which will appear fabulous to posterity, and will remain as a monument to German stupidity. "
- The World as Will and Idea, vol. 2 (1844)

"Now if for this purpose I were to say that the so-called philosophy of this fellow Hegel is a colossal piece of mystification which will yet provide posterity with an inexhaustible theme for laughter at our times, that it is a pseudo-philosophy paralyzing all mental powers, stifling all real thinking, and, by the most outrageous misuse of language, putting in its place the hollowest, most senseless, thoughtless, and, as is confirmed by its success, most stupefying verbiage, I should be quite right.
If I were to say that this pseudo-philosophy has as its central idea an absurd notion grasped from thin air, that it dispenses with reasons and consequents, in other words, is demonstrated by nothing, and itself does not prove or explain anything, that it lacks originality and is a mere parody of scholastic realism and at the same time of Spinozism, and that the monster is also supposed to represent Christianity turned inside out, hence, The face of a lion, the belly of a goat, the hindquarters of a dragon, again I should be right.
Further, if I were to say that this [Great Philosopher] of the Danish Academy scribbled nonsense quite unlike any mortal before him, so that whoever could read his most eulogized work, the so-called Phenomenology of the Mind, without feeling as if he were in a madhouse, would qualify as an inmate for Bedlam, I should be no less right."
- On the Basis of Morality (1839)

I want to listen to some Hegelwave now.

This.

This board is full of 20 years old ignorant and frustrated American kids. There was a time when you could find some intetesting and long posts. It's gone.

Make a new thread about Lolita, Pynchon, Hemmmingway, spoooooks, i wanna be christian what should I read, Nietzsche, oh shit I'm 25 and still unpublished what to do Veeky Forums, tfw neet, etc.

What to do after a graduate degree in philosophy? Just keep doing casual philosophy during life? Write books?

Well, what are they getting wrong?

Thanks for the real insightful post. I hope to see some more in the future.

People have no patience and they don't want to work their brains off on what they are reading, they want clear cut, easy writing on a silver platter.

Not to sound cultlike, but Hegel's philosophical method involves a holistic transformation in the way that you view certain relationships with regard to "Geist" (as mind, spirit, but also their cultural and intellectual products). It's described or outlined succinctly nowhere IN Hegel's writings, but is a result of studying Hegel extensively.

>Hegelism is like a mental disease; you can't know what it is until you get. it, and then you can't know because you have got it -- Max Eastman

There is no one single program for reading Hegel, and the culmination of his thought (and thus your mental transformation, in reading him) lies in the Science of Logic, which is fucking unreadable for the vast majority of people, even philosophically talented people, and even many philosophically brilliant people who nevertheless have constitutions likely to reject it.

The result is that even among people talented, dedicated, and weird enough to fully grok Hegel (i.e., not simply as revelation, but to the point that they can clearly and lucidly think about where Hegel went wrong), most take away only partial readings of him or snippets of his work. And among the infinitely more numerous students and followers of these figures, misreadings of these initial misreadings are the only thing that proliferates to begin with. Many "Hegelians" had basic knowledge of the Phenomenology and a scattering of other writings, and then their teacher's stronger interpretation of the whole. That's it.

Take Kojeve for example. Kojeve clearly has a very partial reading of Hegel, guided by Marx, who himself has a very partial reading of Hegel. Then take the French Hegelians, the lineage of so much of modern Hegel scholarship: Most of them didn't even read Hegel. They attended Kojeve's brilliant lectures, or received them second-hand. That's the archetype for how Hegelianism spreads.

Of course, modern undergrads are basically retards, so they're getting this whole process exponentially multiplied with each generation of remove from the original. People who study Hegel for ten years in grad school barely understand Hegel, just focusing on snippets of his work.

>Hegel
You misspelled Kant

Once you get to German Idealism it becomes a spiritual language, not even being ironic either. Kant made a language through his critiques and then the German Idealists just modified it and gave it fire. It takes a different kind of acquaintance with philosophy to really understand the movement.

And this

because his philosophy is useful (when misinterpreted) to give anti-intellectual leftist ideas some sort of foundation

I'm not gonna take advice from someone who can't spell math right

dank maymays Veeky Forums

hegel literally says his philosophy will absorb the entire future

you cant misinterpret hegel because he thinks he predicted that you would minsinterpret him

hegel thinks he has a monopoly on the absolute

What is an example of his misinterpretation? His philosophy is largely accessible, but certainly, he leaves room for interpretation in the Phenomenology. Issues like I-I-Ego, and the Lord-Bondsman

Nonetheless, out of the Gerrmans Kant is obviously preferred because of cuck analytic (muh cases and pure reason!). For the continentals Heidegger's greatest inspiration being Nietzsche and the Greeks, for Deleuze, being generally against dialectics in philosophy.

Then what do? Read Hegel for years and let the Hegel transformation take place subconsciously? Or don't read him at all? Do you think Hegel should be read and studied by a philosopher? Stick to his original sources?

Simply: is Hegel worth it to be read or a waste of time?

Jerking off to porn is a waste of time, cunt. Not reading philosophy.

>Why is Hegel the most misinterpreted philosopher of all time?

I think you mean Hackel.

Very nice formulated coherent argument which shows your deep understanding of the use or disuse of Hegel's philosophy. Bravo!
