I love the discussions and most of the suers here far more than anywhere on reddit, but the anonymous format makes it hard for me to keep track of discussions and topics.
That being said, would anyone be interested in creating a new subreddit for literature with me? One that doesn't suck.
R/books is full of garbage and idiots and the r/literature lately has just been full of links that nobody discusses. The mods on it are also horrible, don't actually moderate, and ban people they take personal issue with.
The sub would basically be moderated by lit users from here who also have fairly decent account histories on reddit.
We could more strictly define discussion topics and try to differentiate ourselves from other subreddits
I know there's other reddit users out there. I've seen fairly frequent posts lately complaining and recommending lit on r/book and r/literature
I for one actually like this idea. You know cuz im not a pseud and care aboit literature not some imaginary tribalistic rivalry between 4chautism and plebbit.
Sebastian Barnes
this is the funniest thread i've seen today. good job
Isaiah Garcia
>I for one actually like this idea. You know cuz im not a pseud and care aboit literature not some imaginary tribalistic rivalry between 4chautism and plebbit.
Same here, but apparently mentioning either board on the other board leads to endless complaints.
Leo Watson
>I love the discussions >the anonymous format makes it hard for me to keep track of discussions and topics the anonymity is the reason the discussions are the way they are. you remove that factor and you just have another group of ball-fondling idiots. lack of an identity is the catalyst for our depth of discussion here. unfortunately that means shitposting too, but it's worth the sacrifice. just learn to navigate threads, it's not even difficult.
I don't even know how to work Reddit, nothing is in chronological order, you faggots keep thumbing up each other and rearranging everything, handing out gold to spend on God-knows-what, and everyone is a goddamn tripfag.
and how am I supposed to roll for dank gets
Joseph Scott
>I for one >>>/ribbit/
Ryan Morgan
>but it's worth the sacrifice
You really think so?
Jonathan Jones
>I don't even know how to work Reddit, nothing is in chronological order, you faggots keep thumbing up each other and rearranging everything, handing out gold to spend on God-knows-what, and everyone is a goddamn tripfag.
So clearly you do know how it works. Top of threads/subs, click sort by, click new. Wow, so hard to get chronological order.
Adam Kelly
That's my problem too. The anonymity just annoys me. I like to have a catalogue of what I've posted. I like to know who I'm talking to. Being anonymous just means way too much shitposting and I end up not caring at all about the community.
Cameron Ward
>Being anonymous just means way too much shitposting
This is all I have a problem with. If this board generated quality discussion while everyone was still anonymous, it'd be great. But the unfortunate reality is that the board is a sewer and the garbage is DFW and Nabokov reposts, entry level book recommendations that are addressed explicitly in the sticky, "this book sucks!" threads with no discussion, etc.
Eli Mitchell
>But the unfortunate reality is that the board is a sewer and the garbage is DFW and Nabokov reposts, entry level book recommendations that are addressed explicitly in the sticky, "this book sucks!" threads with no discussion, etc.
And this is the same problem I have with the two largest book/literature subs on reddit. /r/literature used to be great and occasionally select thread swill be, but the last few months it's just a place for karmawhores to endlessly copy paste every book related article they see on twitter. The mods do this as well and rarely anyone comments on the intent they themselves are starting new threads for.
Nathan Hughes
It's because of the separate /pol/ and reddit user influxes. Redditors tend to view this board as only being for shitposting, and /pol9k/ posters can't have a sane discussion without making it about how women/the left/normiez suck.
Henry Sanchez
>It's because of the separate /pol/ and reddit user influxes. Redditors tend to view this board as only being for shitposting, and /pol9k/ posters can't have a sane discussion without making it about how women/the left/normiez suck.
Going with the /pol/ thing, any rational discussion of race on book subreddits gets down voted into oblivion. Like if you say "so and so only won that award because they're a black author and it's 2016" you get shit on, regardless of the validity of the statement,
Adrian Wright
I agree that that is a major problem. Even people who appear to be interested in literature often make worthless threads, though:
and so on.
Agreed also, though I don't know anything about those subreddits or reddit in general. Your observations of /r/literature sound a lot like here, where there's maybe one or two good threads every now and then while the rest is shitposts. It's a major problem. At this point the board might as well be deleted.
Colton Scott
>goes to Veeky Forums and asks to make a subreddit
The fuck are you doing here, lad?
Thomas Hall
>Your observations of /r/literature sound a lot like here, where there's maybe one or two good threads every now and then while the rest is shitposts. It's a major problem. At this point the board might as well be deleted.
Literally 14 thread links on the front page of it without a single comment. Mods themselves starting these threads.
Carson Smith
Trying to start a new literature board devoid of shitposting with actual discussions. Trying to find people that care about discussions more than arguing about plebz and the virtues of being contrarians
Ian White
ITT proof that Veeky Forums is literally a reddit board
Zachary Sanchez
8/10 bait. Would get moderately rustled again.
Nicholas Roberts
there are pockets of resistance
Landon Ward
>Top of threads/subs, click sort by, click new. Wow, so hard It is unnecessary. Now if there were a way to have anonymity, not have the upvote shit, and not appear in the reddit searches then...
Oh wait, that's here.
Andrew Peterson
Reddit seems fucking perfect for you.
I'm sure they'll welcome you with open arms.
Daniel Mitchell
plebbid lol
Gavin Mitchell
Reddit hate thread? Reddit hate thread.
Jaxon Barnes
He's been writing for 5 years, lads.
Colton Evans
This is /r/books btw
Grayson Adams
"Litchan" subreddit. Literature, philosophy, history.
Intimidatingly high level of discourse. Meme trilogies galore.
Make it happen, OP.
Kevin Jenkins
>philosophy
Please fuck no
Mason Green
Any Veeky Forums subreddit would have to remove upvotes and enforce anonymity. And automatically sort by new.
:^)
Jayden Smith
Do they have quality discussion there instead of constant shitposting?
Chase Hughes
It's got "bad" in front of its name. It was built for circle-jerked shitposting.
Still, at least it's not /r/bad "nihilism is bad because it doesn't get anything done" philosophy.
Kevin Bennett
Not me personally, but if you choose to do so, I recommend making it a private sub that you can join by invitation only.
Xavier Roberts
He is right though. If you change the target but not the point, like saying Alexeivich won the Nobel because she hates Putin, thats fine.
But if you say the Man Booker is awarding blacks two years in a row, really makes you think, you get shat upon.
Eli Phillips
the "/pol9k/" posters youre talking about are also just faggots from rebbit here fkr the "dank memes"
or false-flagging lefties. which is really common lately
Zachary Thomas
Just go on the Veeky Forums discord/IRC channel
Bentley Barnes
its literally a bunch of high schoolers talking about their fapping habits and confessing to other embarassing shit
i have still to witness actual lit related discussion on that discord
Bentley Peterson
I like the idea OP.
We should make it private, that way it can be exclusively for Veeky Forums as a way of having an archive of discussions that aren't just full of people posting about John Green and DFW.
Hell we could even have better crit threads, since reddit is better suited to longer text.
I'm all aboard, how do we start?
Josiah Lewis
It's not false-flagging lefties; it's the false-flagging counter-jerk. It was inevitable ever since /pol/'s ascent to normiedom, but Trump's election really sealed the deal.
Watch: Veeky Forums will turn aggressively socialist. Or, at least SOMETHING contrarian. Perhaps libertarians will become big again.
Christian Myers
>wanting a sense of community to care for.
Would you just leave already?
Ayden Johnson
>dosto/joyce/pinecone circlejerk sub Nty
Jaxson Hughes
Have you fucked any of them?
Jaxson Powell
tragic.... literally intro to phil: the text
Samuel Bailey
No, my friend. It is worse.
He's finding the Apology -difficult-.
Christian Parker
Veeky Forums is dead forever.
It will only be fixed when the mods start doing their jobs and banning all beginner threads.
Right, but that's a thread for asking equations about literary studies, not actually discussing literature.
It's al;so full of PhD candidates studying high fantasy and comic books ad shit who get butthurt when anyone implies that they aren't actual highbrow "Literature"
Jack Lee
The name is awkward. Actual literature isn't inherent academic. This makes it sound like a discussion board for professors.
Carter Ortiz
what is the semi-anonymity of boards like Veeky Forums and 420chan's random name assignment
just enforce semi-anonymity
if you can make a subreddit theme of the Veeky Forums catalog it would be great also
Maybe something like (idk if any of these are taken already):
/r/lit
/r/actual literature
/r/literary
Also someone with CSS skills would need to join so it doesn't look like shit
Jonathan Rogers
Awkward as well, but if someone sets it up we should all message them and become mods. Or some of us at least.
Luke Hughes
Fuck off reddit
James Fisher
Well, I've already made now, msg me on reddit or add me on skype: "absurd0n" If you'd like to moderate it or would help me on making a CSS for it
Nicholas Powell
>shitposting >bad Do you guys have no sense of humor? Fucking ledditors I swear
Jordan Ramirez
This.
If you think the meme books here are bad, just wait until you transplant the pseud atmosphere here to a subreddit.
The only reason this board doesn't have good conversations that can be followed is because nobody here actually has interpretations for what they read. They're just collecting books. It will be the same on reddit.
On second thought, this is a great thing. All redditors should leave and never come back.
Jonathan Howard
>The only reason this board doesn't have good conversations that can be followed is because nobody here actually has interpretations for what they read. They're just collecting books. It will be the same on reddit.
/r/literature used to have actual discussions and occasionally still does. The problem is the moderation team refuses to discuss complaints, listen to suggestions, or actually moderate aside from banning users who complain. The board claims it's for "discussions" in its own description but now it's just endless links with no comments that get hundreds of up votes still
The creator of that sub just spam posts endless news links from Guardian Books and shit and any time someone tells him to start discussions on the links if he's going to post them he bans them and sends these ridiculous PM's full of incorrectly used words like it's some sort of vocab lesson
Jaxson Lopez
I'll still use both
James Morris
Why do leddittards think that we have some dearth of discussion? We have shitposting, sure. But shitposting isn't bad. Imagine hanging out with your friends. Most of the time you aren't embroiled in some deep, philosophical discussion. You banter and laugh and make jokes. Why shouldn't we be allowed to banter and joke on here? Do you really think that Veeky Forums should consist exclusively of fake reddit-tier "discussions"? Is that why you get so mad when someone makes a feel post or posts Pepe? "Oh, I'm no much more cultured than these inferior plebians who have genuine, informal discussion. I need my e-penis stroked so that everyone knows how smart I am!" you're thinking to yourself.
They're just mad that there are people who disagree with them. Hence le /pol/ boogeyman. For them, a "discussion" should be the kind they have on reddit, where two psueds post long self-absorbed posts showing off their supposed knowledge of philosophy and literature and generally acting like fags, jerking each other off over how "cultured" and "deep" they are. Reddit is just a content aggregator. Veeky Forums is where the real discussion and creative work comes from.
But if you want that, by all means go. It's fine, we won't miss you.
Xavier Thompson
I have no problem with memes or pepe, I just frequently use both boards and would like to have an actual literature discussion board available on reddit as well.
Nearly any serious thread on here is leagues ahead of the card-level discussions they're having on /r/literature or god help me /r/books.
lit also knows world literature, whereas reddioters fear reading anything that wasn't written by white english speakers
Ryder Bailey
subscribed, thanks
Nathaniel Campbell
Take a look at any tripfag-filled thread/general and you will see what lack of anonymity does to quality on Veeky Forums. If you think Veeky Forums is bad now, just wait for it to be comprised solely of Butterflys and OSiRiSes
