Race relationships have always been very fucked up there, and the way they handled that was by giving Blacks and Native Americans special prerogatives as a compensation, like affirmative action or the casinos.
Because of that, many people want to be considered minorities in the USA, to get access to priviledes for minorities, even the majority of the population (women), and now fat people.
