I figure this board is mostly STEM majors, so I'm curious to hear how many of you are working while going to school (regardless of its relevance to your field) and how you balance it with your workload.

Trust fund.

>no work no extracurriculars for 4 years undergrad
>dean's list every semester
>do internship final year of masters degree program for 20hr/wk
>go to a single networking function where I am introduced to the office manager at the firm I want to work for
>tell them straight up that I want to work for them and give reasons
>start job immediately after graduation at said job

I cranked out school and then work hard during the summer to pay for the school.
Jobs during the school year is difficult - I used to have a rule where I wouldn't work over X hours a week where X is the amount of credits I'm taking for the semester. Half that amount during exam time. Good luck.

Worked part-time throughout undergrad, now working full-time while doing a part-time master's

It's not bad desu, just be sure to stay well-rested and make sure the stress doesn't get to you

YMMV with that method, but I too got my first job offer by going to a networking event and talking directly to the top dog. Unfortunately, most networking events only have low-level HR guys that just tell you to apply online

I have a rich gf that basically takes care of me while I pretend to study physics while jerking my dick all day and fucking her when she's home. Dunno if I'd consider it work desu.

Trust fund kid here.
I hope she realises and sues your arse for damages when you drop out because you know next to nothing about your supposed major.
Then it will be rather amusing to read about your impoverished life ending on the streets as you you freeze or starve to death.
This is a prime example of why classes should only interact based upon merit.

Dude just because I don't study doesn't mean I don't ace the courses. lol

I do university 5 hours and then work 5 hours every week day. There are many details about how I balance it out but here is the main part:

I am smart. This is the only thing. I was a born smart. You may think I am being cocky but not at all. This is the hard reality. If I was not naturally smart then university would consume my life. I study pure mathematics and the load is heavy as fuck. If I could not understand concepts the first time I read through them I would be fucked. The way I can handle my daily work load is because I understand everything taught to me in class so afterwards all that is left is that I practice for a couple of hours to refine my knowledge and do well in the next round of tests.

Now into the details:

>Work quickly. At my job all that I do I do as fast as I can. Being able to do this also ties up with the being born smart thing but lets forget about that. The reason I do things fast is because...
>Take a lot of rests during work. I work at a desk in front of a computer and many times I just put down work and open a tab of Veeky Forums or online-go.com and just rest for 30 minutes to a whole hour depending on the day. This is to help ease the stress. Other activities involve reading manga or...
>Study while at the office. Yes, no joke. When the day is soft I just straight up pull out my notebook and study or do homework. This way I can reduce the stress on my free-time in the weekend which I kinda need because having a girlfriend means half of my weekend is dedicated to not-studying. That said, sometimes even if the day is full of shit to do I still do this because it is relaxing to study mathematics. Well, it is as relaxing as browsing Veeky Forums or reading manga.
cont.

Haha holy shit dude you're delusional as fuck.

Cont:

>Study whenever I fucking can. When I get early to university and my classes have not yet started what I do is sit down and study. When I go out to the mall or a restaurant I study. I can do this because I have all of my books in pdf form in my phone so it doesn't matter where I am, I can study. When I go out to a date with my girlfriend I read more of my books than I talk to her.

>Work whenever I fucking can
As I said, my work involves sitting in a desk in front of a computer but that computer is a laptop, which means I can take it home. Yes, I work at home sometimes. Not all the time but getting rid of the easy tasks today means that tomorrow I can browse Veeky Forums more in the office, or use that time to do harder tasks.

That's all, I think. Basically you can't be lazy and you can't be dumb.

t. someone who isn't doing both things at the same time

Take my advice or leave it. What you see in that post is my life every day of the week. If you don't want to see it as truth or valuable then that's your problem.

>5 hours work + 5 hours school
>slacks off and does homework at work
>"heavy workload"
>"i am smart"
Is this bait?

In that case, well done, you're exactly what the upper echelon need.

> lying on the internet

>>slacks off and does homework at work

I don't slack off. I work quickly so that I have what pretty much amounts to free time while at work. Of course, I constantly check my e-mail for incoming shit to do and drop all of my leisure bullshit when something new comes up.

>>"heavy workload"
By that I mean the university workload. There is a lot to do and a lot to study.

>>"i am smart"

As I said. You don't have to take that part. I said it because it is the cold and hard reality. The unfairness of this world. You can, for all I care, pretend that we live in fairy tale land and ignore the first part of my post and just take the greentext.

That said, whenever you want to leave fairy tale land I'll be here for you.

I'm afraid that this lack of discipline will impact heavily upon my future work.

Why would I lie? Admittedly, I did have a B from complex analysis last semester, but everything else was an A.

math major. work in a factory/warehouse 24 hours a week to pay for tuition

Kid, grow up

Kek.

Yeah, I know. The unfairness of this world is a hard red pill to swallow. Much more palatable is the hard-work bluepill. So just to give you some rest I will rephrase my disclaimr in terms of your bluepill.

I am a hard worker.. This is the only thing. I worked hard to become a hard worker. You may think I am being cocky but not at all. This is the hard reality. If I had not trained to be a hard worker then university would consume my life. I study pure mathematics and the load is heavy as fuck. If I could not work hard to understand concepts I would be fucked. The way I can handle my daily work load is because I work so hard.

There you go? Happy?

That said, remember that blue pill stands for a made up world you decide to live in so that you don't have to face the hard realities of this uncaring and godless world.

Harder worker doesn't equate to being born with superior or even above average intelligence.

Nigger, we're laughing at you, not because we think everyone is equally intelligent, but because you think that taking some undergrad math courses and working as a part-timer means you're "smart"

Seriously, get some perspective and apply yourself. Based on what you've said, you're nowhere near smart enough to coast by in life without breaking a sweat.

>"hard red pill"
>"hard-work bluepill"

did you also happen to acquire the fundamentals of logic by the age of 12(ish) ?

I know. I was lying. My friend over there has chosen the blue pill. He thinks that success = hard work. And I, as a flawed person who has also chosen the blue pil many times before, would not ever dare to forcefully pull someone out of their simulation.

Deciding to come back to reality is a choice only the person can make for themselves.

> because you think that taking some undergrad math courses and working as a part-timer means you're "smart"

First, I am not saying that I am smart because I do those things. I say that I can do those things because I am smart.

>Seriously, get some perspective and apply yourself. Based on what you've said, you're nowhere near smart enough to coast by in life without breaking a sweat.

Oh this is true. I know it. And I also work hard but as someone who is in my own shoes I know that if I was worked as hard as I do now, but I didn't have my natural intellect, I would be fucked.

And there is a second red pill behind my success. My parents are rich. Well, not rich rich but middle class. Which means I have a lot of privileges. I sometimes think that if it weren't for their money and connections I wouldn't be as smart as I am (private school) or even have the job that I have.

Maybe I would be as smart. Maybe not. But it is also a variable. Another big unfairness in this world.

I am not that guy and I was a late bloomer. I acquired the fundamentals of logic by 16.

This.

Please go on.

If you no longer doubt my tips then there is nothing to go on about. I came to this thread for one reason only: To share the truth of the unfairness of this world.

Do you accept my tale of the unfairness? Good. You've learned. And now I have nothing else to say.

Come on. That' just teasing. I'm sure there's some more wisdom in there.

I'll bite. You can ask something if you want. I am just watching youtube videos right now after all. Might aswell say more stuff.

After wall, he was born intelligent, that's an awful amount of time to formulate one's own philosophy... surely?

Perhaps when you're able to teach yourself calculus one to three in a month, then I'll be impressed.

Is time a cross product of the lower dimensions?

>Perhaps when you're able to teach yourself calculus one to three in a month, then I'll be impressed.

Pretty dumb. I see no value in rushing through a calculus course. So much important information you will be applying in the future and you want to rush through it? That sounds retarded. Mathematics, specially the fundamentals, aren't a speed-through contest. That is why I am never impressed when they say of an 8 year old "genius" that he "learned" all of algebra and trigonometry in a month. Sure, he learned all that in a month but so could a monkey.

That doesn't even make sense.

I work as a TA for a first year course part time, but I do it because it's fun not because I need the money.

>Sure, he learned all that in a month but so could a monkey.
What? That doesn't even make sense. :^)

>That doesn't even make sense.
No, no, it wouldn't for a brainlet... that's a shame... brainlet confirmed.

>What? That doesn't even make sense. :^)

Maybe monkey is an exageration but I think anyone could learn all of calculus in a month. Even the biggest retard. It is not a feat. That is because what people count as "learning all of it" is that you can pass some test of it afterwards and you don't even need to understant the concept of a limit to pass a calculus test.

Going back to the 8 year old genius. If there is something all those 8 year old geniuses have in common is that their parents were rich or academics or both. Which means that they put them, since birth, in a bullet train of learning. Via private tutors and special schools. It is no wonder that they learned all of algebra in a month or two.

Take the young Terence Tao and take away his parents, replacing them with an illiterate farmer from Pakistan and even today Terence Tao could not compute 1+1=2.

found the highschooler

>Veeky Forums in a nutshell

Sorry to disappoint. I'm legit.

I worked 20-40 hours/week during my Bachelors (mechanical engineering). I balanced it every day by either fulfilling all my scholastic obligations or getting to bed by 1 AM, whichever came first. That guaranteed that I got a healthy amount of sleep and that I wasn't wasting time on unproductive things. As long as you're willing to put school over pleasure it's easy enough. If you need motivation just think of the interest you won't be paying on even more student loans because you worked through school instead. A;so be sure to work internships over the Summer for way more $.

High school drop out.

I do inventory scanning work and study science in my free time.

If real kys

I used to attend lectures before going to work. It was quite terrible with 14 hours of stuff for 5 days and just resting due to lowered energy levels for 2 days. I ended up in a burnout. Nowadays I just work and skip lectures.

Leeel

Highschool senior here (I'm 18 fuck off) and Umass commit. I plan on majoring in Chemistry but have not taken Calc 1 or AP Chem, how fucked am I?
Also, you guys think its feasible with a sport+ROTC?

Regular chemistry, you'll do ok. You'll be pressed a little for time once you start getting into real labs, but you'll not have to live in the lab like ochem guys.

As for not taking calc or AP chem, whatever, just don't be a dumbass and make your education your priority (sure, party and the like, but make sure your work is done). Use the resources the school provides if you need help.

I don't work, I don't need to since uni is cheap here

GI bill. after almost dying for israel i now just smoke weed, go to class, and read books. welfare queen to the max right now.

Noice

I work 2 full days a week and need to go into uni for 2 days of 1 hour each a week. I don't go to or watch the lecturers because they go for 2 hours per unit and my lecturers repeat stuff a lot and I don't need it. I just read the lecture slides and make my own notes of them.

I utilise the other days of the week to volunteer in my field, as experience is everything to getting a job on graduation for me, socialise and study. I'm blessed with the ability to understand and recall new concepts very quickly, so I normally have to only read through certain things once. However, my field involves a lot of just basic ROTE memorisation that I do have to take time studying for. I minimise the interruptions to my life by using Anki on my phone to make flashcards I review when it suits me. I have also become a master of utilising the fact my online quizzes are open book.

Thankfully come next semester I'll be involved in a lot more prac through my uni courses and I fucking thrive with that shit.

I couldn't imagine how annoying it would be if I had to reread everything multiple times to understand it. The workload is already huge and some weeks it takes me up to 4 hours per unit for the readings.

Ive been working and going to school on and off for years, took me 6 years but i will finally get my BS this June. Basically im poor as shit and to help out my family with bills and stuff. To anyone deciding whether to get a job while going to school i suggest you eaither find a job IN your school or deliver pizza, which is what i do now. Its fucking easy, i save every check and basically use the tip money to pay for gas, expenses, bills etc.

flipped burgers part-time at McDoodleburgers while I was studying CS for cash. In Australia tertiary education is a sweet deal where I pay the government back - not scumbag universities

Lots of Adderal and tutoring. I find teaching others helps me study the best. Those are two things I highly recommend for any up-and-coming chemistry major!
