It seems like anti-globalization sentiments is one of the main driving forces of the populist anti-immigration movements growing across the west and it really cuts right through the whole right-left dichotomy.

We have the people who sees open borders as a way for businesses to lower wages, destroy group cohesiveness and to weaken political institutions. On the other side we have the people who sees open borders as a necessary step towards the unification of people across the globe.

I don't know what to make of it. I always thought of nation-states in the same way that I think about religious institutions. It's a way to effectively organize different groups and make people work together towards a common goal. Eventually we could do away with them when the time is right but that time isn't now.

Le Jewish charity man strikes again

Thanks, I'll pick this up.
I'd also be interested in people who sees things differently. It seems to me that the modus operandi of most big shot policy influencers is this kind of Soros song and dance routine with donations, speculation and anti-tribalism.

Kind of a meme answer but I think that reading Brave New World is important to understanding this. Globalization is an economically-driven movement above all else and Brave New World is an attempt at representing the logical and optimal end-result of a society driven purely by economic growth. There are people who sincerely see nothing wrong with the Brave New World and think that the protagonist is a whiny bitch, what you think about Brave New World is an easy way to assess where you stand on globalization.

But why are large parts of the parliamentary left going through with it? It seems counter-productive to their cause but they're most often the biggest open borders proponents

Depends on each country. In Australia all of the politicians are balls deep in the property market, so if the economy starts to fail their kids might have to work for a living. Long-term human dignity is an acceptable casualty in the pursuit of $$$. Also many politicians probably just aren't that bright or thoughtful and legitimately don't see the harm they're doing. Again it depends on your government but in Australia the 'Green' party is far more interested in being politically correct than actually correct. They're more interested in signalling their virtue to fellow hipsters and holding anti-Trump demonstrations despite not sharing a continent with him than actually addressing real causes of environmental decay. And whenever they do go for the environment it's always trendy meme-issues.

tl;dr politicians are retarded scum and you should vote for right-wing populists just to spite them

While statement like this hits close to center it still contains a lot of stereotyping. What if there was a politician who was actually good and not retarded scum? How is he going to cut through all these assumptions ? I can easily see a lot of good people being shot down because of this.

A good solution would be a wikipedia-like site containing verified track records for each and every politician that is or ever has been in parliament. This way we wouldn't have to rely on CNN, BBC and the like to have spoon fed information obscuring correct decision making.
As far as I know info like this exists only in highly scattered form and/or conspiracy theory-level doubtful.

FUCK OFF YOU FUCKING /POL/ INVADERS

SAGE ALL RACIST, SEXIST, FASCIST /POL/ THREADS

GO THERE AND STAY THERE FROGMAN

Bump

Also interested in this. Especially in antiglobalism.

I for one cannot understand why anyone who isn't a business magnate would want it.

Read the Empire series by Hardt & Negri, and Imperialism by Lenin

That exists for the UK, and showed for example that David Cameron while going on about gay marriage had for most of his career been incredibly anti-gay.

However it really amounts to nothing since most do not get their news, facts or opinions from such sources.

Because the benefits from trade are enormous.

There's all sorts of reasons, but mostly there is no real for or against, globalism just happens under certain conditions. If you try and fight it economics will fuck you up.

Hiro pls delet /qa/ kthx

The greatest problem with open borders is Islam. Their idea of unification is convert or die.

You can't be tolerant of the intolerant, that way the whole system collapses.

Take it easy, I just think it's a funny picture and a good summarization of the underlying fears fueling the white identitarian movement

Maybe the problem is that I haven't thought critically enough about economics. Somehow I imagined that it's all just systems and they can be tweaked for optimal performance. I'm coming at it from a Swedish perspective and what I'm seeing is the destruction of the welfare state. We're actively subsidizing thousands of immigrants who'll never be able to contribute monetarily, intellectually or culturally. The left keeps talking about diversification and the right keeps talking about the free market. Neither cares about interpersonal trust and its relevance for civic engagement, economic development and income inequality.
The sick part of it is that both parties stand to gain from it. The left keep on pushing this updated version of the white man's burden narrative in which the inability of north african immigrants to contribute to Swedish society is due to white racism (it's a puzzle that the left should be allowed to solve with state intervention, ideally) and the right ultimately get what they always wanted, lower wages and tax cuts.

Tanzi - Government versus Markets. It's the book you want. Trust me.

Visit a half decent university or academic library and there'll be endless books to go through...

Sincerely, these are some great comments. Good thread everyone.

To maximize GDP the smartest men and women should forgo reproducing in order to earn as much money as possible. Biological reproduction, a form of unskilled labor, can be performed most efficiently by those with fewer marketable skills. Trade specialisation; this is basic economics 101 folks.

rapid economic globalisation with an unprepaired population will lead to unemployment, as seen in the rust belt in the last US election, voting for an anti-globalist candidate who has claimed to bring jobs back.

I believe complete globalisation of the world with correct and democratic world government would lead to a more efficient economy(but with unchecked damage to the environment), with everyone on the planet been able to access information and share information science would boom especially with no language barriers, but all at a huge loss of a nations culture which would just waste away into a global swarm.
