Engineering major?

>allowed to use calculators in Calc 3

kids these days.

There's nothing you need a calculator for outside of approximations, and physics.

It's time to let go of your security blanket.

how would a calculator even help you in a calculus class? the only way i can think of is if you're one of those retards who doesn't know how to compute sin(pi) or ln(e^2).

No, for any major. Even people in remedial babby math aren't allowed to use calculators for anything. Also some poor sap has to go through Chem 1 without using a calculator.

what school?

what's the purpose of banning calculators anyway?

>brainlet upset he can't use 'xsolv' or use his 1000 dollar calculator to do all the integrals and derivatives

Checking your answers, obviously.

does your calculator calculate derivatives?

even a ti84 can do that

A good professor makes his exams in such a way yoy don't need calculators.

huh, i'll be darned.

It can only do definites.

You'd need an 89 or CAS NSPIRE for indefinite

be in calculus 2, need to do basic division, haven't done long division since middle school, no calculator, jesus fucking Christ fuck my life, basic question now takes ten times longer because cant do the basic arithmetic on the calculator.

>>>/reddit/

I remember that back in Calc 1 when doing limits I was so paranoid that after every exercise in a test, even the trivial ones, I would use my calculator to check my answer.

>The lim as x approaches 0
Lets plug in 0.01 into the function
>The lim as x approaches 1
Lets plug in 0.999

kek. It was a nice way to keep my sanity in the time the professor graded it. Otherwise I would be anxious as fuck, I don't know why. I do not like it when I cannot check my solutions, even for petty shit. So I feel bad for you OP.

>even a ti84 can do that

even a $15 Casio scientific calculator can do that too, but as said, it can only do definite derivatives/integrals

This should have been.
>going to uni where calculators are relevant at all

Why would you EVER need a calculator for. Even if I was allowed one in all exams I wouldnt have used it once.

Calculators are definitely handy, but too many people use them as a crutch to the point that they think it's a substitute for actually understanding the material. I've seen people spend an hour plugging random shit into their calculator then turn in an almost entirely blank exam.

retarded frogposter

to fuck the students over so they fail and have to pay again to retake the class.

>summerfag who can't into gree arrows

>approximations
Those are done in your head

>Chem 1 with no calculator
Fucking why? That's just inefficient. Do they just not teach stoichiometry or something?

to make you actually have the skills your degree says you have

also to stay competitive with chiner

3 years of CS, the only time i was allowed to use a calculator during an exam was in Probability Theory. The """professor""" was a senile old man though. I'm surprised the university didn't fire him yet. I could have straight up cheated off my neighbor and he wouldn't have noticed.

We're only allowed to use the HP10s+

lmao casual

You don't really need it for anything in calculus.

>sin(pi)
Unit circle
>ln(e^2)
LOL are you serious?

Brainlet detected.

behold
a rare sighting of the wild retard

>needing a calculator to do derivatives and integrals

Alot of old professors who can't into technology have no clue about smartwatches. you can just cheat off those.

fucking hell, you guys really are quick with these meme pics.

are you dumb?

Calculators can handle symbolic equations. My college allowed Maple in many classes. But then the ones that didn't allow any calculators were even that much more of a bitch because it was like having your crutches kicked away suddenly.

>no calculators
Are you planning for a fucking post ww3 world or something. Stupid science bill nye fucks

What understanding of fucking arithmetic dp you need in uni?

>he's never seen a grown man struggle with the concept of a percentage

you can use calculators in calc III? fucking why? you literally don't need it

What would you even need it for? How are you going to prove your theorems if you dont know how it works?

the amount of posts ITT advocating for calculator usage in math classes such as calculus is quite ridiculous. Is it just one guy? You're wrong buddy.

>bill nye fucks
funny you say this. it's leftists (such as yourself) that are pro-calculator, i.e. pro mathematical welfare for the lazy and the slow because math is not INCLUSIVE enough.

conservatives, on the other hand, know the value of developing your intuition and efficiency through hours of practice and drilling on the fundamentals

Gotta love the old trick of packing the calculator memory with formulas and notes. It's funny how one school like OP has draconian ban, while at others you not only get the calculator but everything you can enter into it. My calc class has just a CAS ban leaving everything else under the sun.

I never understand this. Calculators dont really work for cheating or for doing a function you dont know how to do, theyre mainly used for efficiency and checking work. yeah most people can do, for example, 53x52x51 either in their head or on paper, but its quicker to use a calculator

>mfw my uni's math tests are open note

How fucked am I?

it's clearly a bunch of engineers, nobody besides them really cares this much about calculus classes.. much less not being allowed to use calculators on the exams

the calculator doesn't help but i feel anxious without it.

ive had my Casio since grade 9 and im not gonna let it go just because sci tells me im a brainlet.

why would you need calculators in cal 1 and 2?

If your answer ever turns into a decimal it's because you forgot your fucking trigonometry kiddo

The only time I was ever allowed to use a calculator for calculus was in AP calculus AB in highschool. And that's only because the teacher for some reason wanted us to learn how to integrate with ti 84s.

How the fuck am I supposed to find things like sin (7) without a calculator?

Also if you're in calculus you should have mastered arithmetic so it's ok to skip it and focus on the new concepts.

Form the Taylor series and find the convergence

>People crying about not having pocket calculators in math and science classes.
Have you guys ever felt: "Oh, now with a calculator, these guys could really check if I got this stuff."

Where would you need sin(7) in a exam?
Are your Profs unable to pose proper exercises?

This was calc I.

My Prof doesn't use clean numbers. He said in real life problems never have clean answers and his job is to teach us to be good engineers and scientists, so he just makes up whatever and let's us use calculators.

see

...

>tfw I can do five-digit addition and subtraction in my head, and three-digit multiplication

Doesn't help when you have to show your work though.

you never have to show your work for simple multiplication problems in college because chances are they're only side calculations

you fucking retarded middle schooler

>5 digit
>3
I'm so proud of you for being able to remember a few numbers as you do calculations.
You're not half as smart as you think you are.

This

you won't know what's sin(7) using your calculator either
and if you're not allowed to leave things like sin(7), log 13, arctan 5/4 in your final answer then it's your fault you chose shit school

Do unis that ban calculators also have a ban on slide rules?

analytical form

I am doing a maths degree and I have never ever had any use of a calculator.

student loan interest?

How am I supposed to do chemistry or biological math then?

get gud

But in real life you need calculators so why not make it realistic?

>LOOK AT ME I'M SUPERIOR FOR TAKING FAR LONGER TO SOLVE SOMETHING THAN EVERYONE ELSE

After basic math (arithmetic/times tables etc.) are taught there's absolutely no reason to ban calculators, I'd especially love to see you guys do stat without one.
