Pls tell me

I do not like fedongras but I want to learn how to be stoic.

grow a beard, read the meditations and Seneca
then start thinking a lot about death

Is that all?

yep, pretty much

Are these books heavy? I am pretty shit at reading.

listen to them in audiobooks then

But audiobooks are for plebs

you can't read books so you're a pleb anyway

Ok I will go listen to audiobooks

I like this board even if this is staged.

Get an ereader.

It is not staged, I really do not know if this information will disappoint you or make it better.

STEP 1: Learn how to think well.

STEP 2: Subjugate the Irrational Man to the Rational, and rule him with diligence (i.e., Put your emotion in service to your reason, and not the reverse).

STEP 3: Choose a path of study and learn everything there is to know about it. Repeat this process as often as possible.

STEP 4: As you pursue the Heights of Knowledge and the Depths of Wisdom, there will come times when most men may seem alien to you. Their lives may seem shallow, their concerns - juvenile, and this may well be true in relation to you. However, in all your looking down do not forget to look up to see the heights to which you may still climb, those men and women, past and present, whose insights you've yet to rival or of whose innovations you are not capable. Do not forget the infinite sea above your head which, should you reach the top of it, to poke your head above the surface, may only reveal another sky-like sea from which you must free yourself.

No matter how far up the ladder you have climbed, you are likely still in the middle of it.

Well meme'd.

Though this was a joke, it would likely help. Keep in mind that it is a specific kind of thinking about death which leads to a stoic nature and not mere morbidity.

The rabble think much and little of death. You only have to look at Hollywood (and it's foreign counterparts) trends to witness it for yourself.

What is an ereader?
Ok how do I get past step 1?

>Learn how to think well.
How do I do that? I'm really bad at it. I make thousand mistakes in my daily life.

I will do my best to give a suitable answer and I hope it helps you, but forgive me if it does not.

To learn to think well, it is a great help to consider those of high achievement now, and in the past.

I say achievement and not "success," to put the emphasis on those who have actually produced something. This can be anything really, so long as it was at the heights of what man is, or was, capable at the time.

Look for common threads in the ways these kinds of people thought, lived, and spent their time. Recognize that they are all flawed, in spite of their greatness, and for that reason, and others, it is better not to emulate any one of them alone.

Rather, take from as many of them as you can the tools you will need to take you to your goals, and be careful to choose the right things to take. Doing this will take careful consideration on your parts.

Glean whatever you can about these people. Do this for the express purpose of learning to see how they see the world around them. Do not merely marvel at their works, ask and seek answer to the questions, "How did they get to the point which permitted them the realization which was necessary to do what they did?" "How did they think about the problems they faced?" "What was the process by which they acquired the skills they needed?"

In the case of an artist, visual or literary, you may ask, "How did they conceive of their works? How did they then plan the execution?"

In any case, whether it is a scientist, philosopher, author, poet, painter, general, politician, professional sports player, ANYTHING - there is a way they think about and view their arts. There is a way they approach doing what they do.

You must seek to learn, not the accumulated knowledge of your predecessors - though that is important. You need to learn how to see things as they saw them.

Be willing to exhaust yourself mentally in contemplation to this end. The next time a curiosity enters your mind for which you have no answer, or to which finding the answer seems difficult, do not shy away from it. Be willing to exhaust yourself to find the answers, as long as the potential insight is worthy, and always, ALWAYS attempt to understand something on your own before seeking the opinion or assistance of someone more qualified than yourself. Do not let others rob you of the joy of solving a problem!

I would also recommend analyzing everything. Many forms of artistic analysis - poetry, painting, film, etc., can be great gymnasiums for the analytical mind.

I should say this as well. Although I put them in steps, these processes take place continually and simultaneously.

As you refine your ability to reason, you should also be striving to deny the dominance of your baser person. Likewise, you should use your particular paths of study as an opportunity to exercise your ability to think - to forward your understanding through thought. Each strand strengthens the rope.

Not trying to be rude or something but I found this to be a common knowledge.

This method is suited to my way of thinking - goal oriented, competitive, etc., but it may not be to yours.

In that case, you must spend time first thinking about yourself.

This is why the ancients had "Know Thyself" inscribed on the temple of Delphi.

This is why the druids symbolized Wisdom as a salmon dwelling in a deep well.

It must be drawn out from within.

Without this a person is merely an imitation of a wise man, and in reality is akin to an application which, through careful programming, can execute a dazzling array of complex operations, but is incapable of innovation.

Anyway, I hope this gives, at least, some idea of where you might begin.

I'm not offended.

I'm glad. Then you understand how to think better than you realize.

Perhaps I should ask then, why do you think you are incapable of thinking well?

This way I may try to provide an answer which will be more relevant, if I am able.

>Perhaps I should ask then, why do you think you are incapable of thinking well?
From experience, sadly. I would usually mess up and completely miss mundane stuff. And a lot of time I don't even realise that I'm conscious.

Read the Stoics and embrace their teachings, obviously.
Start taking care of your body, eat healthy and moderately. Meditate everyday, don't watch porn or masturbate and don't let qts get you out of focus.
Refrain from the use of alcohol and other drugs, don't visit bars, clubs, big parties and other forms of hedonistic behavior and degeneracy.

Then your problem isn't likely a lack of thinking. It is probably that you are so busy thinking you are abstracted from reality to an extent.

I would instead suggest, for the purposes of becoming more stoic, that you more consciously, actively direct your thought processes to those topics which the stoics considered worth consideration.

Out of curiosity, are you familiar with Jungian Typology (MBTI)? If you are, do you know your personality type? Would you be comfortable in sharing it?

I love it - so concise.

>It is probably that you are so busy thinking you are abstracted from reality to an extent.
Yes, I daydream a lot.
>Jungian Typology (MBTI)? If you are, do you know your personality type?
I usually score INTP/INFP

First post best post

you dont, the weak ones will fuck you up

learn to accept the fact that you will eventually have to rescue a largely worthless humanity from post-apocalyptic devastation which they brought upon themselves for not paying attention to the principles you live by

your boy marcus defended rome from external barbarians. you will defend rome from internal barbarians. people will hate you for not being as ugly and evil and degenerate as they are. imagine being put in charge of a planetary heroin withdrawal centre without hope of reprieve. you will have to make it a garden for them while making it a prison for you

people are weak but you cannot be the grand inquisitor. when you die they will call you a hero and a cuck at the same time and then return to degeneracy the second you are not watching. the foxes will always try to get into the henhouse. it's what foxes do

nobody will understand. you cannot use this an excuse

Interesting.

With INTP and INFP the core is the same - Extraverted Intuition to Introverted Sensing, but the dominant function and the repressed function are opposites.

In the case of an INFP they lead with Introverted Feeling. This is a valuing function, wherein a person develops a strong sense of their own personal values, feelings, beliefs, etc.,.

The repressed function is Extroverted Thinking, which might explain why you feel you are poor at thinking and excellent at daydreaming.

However, in the case of an INTP, the dominant function (your go-to weapon for interfacing with the world) would be Introverted Thinking - a very contemplative function, and it would be your Extroverted Feeling - a social harmonizing function, which would be repressed.

Whatever the case, the core is a process of synthesizing the information gathered by the dominant function (your dominant to Extroverted Intuition, or "Ne," loop), and then comparing the information which has been synthesized to your past experiences via the cataloging function of Introverted Sensing (Si).

If you're an INFP, your synthesis and cataloging will revolve around your own inner world, most likely, and your Te, Extroverted Thinking, a conjecturing, rather than contemplative, function, will be repressed.

If you are a INTP, your synthesis and cataloging will revolve around the systems which you have chosen to examine or assimilate into your world view, and it is your Fe, Extroverted Feeling, which will be repressed.

I have one roommate who is INTP, and one of my sisters is INFP, so I'm familiar with their types. Which one sounds more like you? If you don't know then try this:

celebritytypes.com/test/infp-or-intp.php

If you'd like.

I'm an INTJ, and I've been studying these things for curiosity's sake recently.

INTJ's and ENTP's have repressed Sensing functions, which creates a sort of detachment from physical reality (ENTP's get the worst of this). This is why your comment peaked my curiosity about your type.

Anyway, I hope you find that interesting, if not, please disregard it, lol.

It is sad this is likely accurate.

How do I understand what's my dominant function? I always score high on both fi and ni

Fantastic post. I was already familiar with most of the information, though some of it was new to me. Out of curiosity, who would be some figures that you look up to personally?

And what would a person who usually scores INTP/ ISTP do?

You are an excellent poster by the way.

Each type has their own ordering of the stacks.

The order for INTP is Ti, Ne, Si, Fe.

The order for INFP is Fi, Ne, Si, Te.

In a more general sense, you recognize your dominant function by understanding what each function does.

Of the two types you said you always get, you are dominant Fi if your primary way of relating through the world is in an internal world of feeling based values.

You are dominant Ti if you are contemplative before anything else.

This is just a simplification, however.

I've found one of the best ways - once you've narrowed it down to a few or a couple of types, is to watch some videos put together by people who know what they are talking about on the subject. When it's you, you'll know.

One of the best YouTube channels I've found for Jung types is Micheal Pierce. He has a video series which goes over all the types.

Here are his videos for INFP and INTP.

youtube.com/watch?v=5BpPVeP6FUI

youtube.com/watch?v=kyqpj75VB18

You'll notice how different the types actually are. Many people think they can type as multiple things, but that is actually impossible as the system deals with the structure each person uses to look at the world. Just a slight change in the introversion or extroversion of a function, or a preference for one function over another is what separates each type from the others - this is also what makes them all interrelated, however.

Sidenote: if you have Ni you wouldn't be either of those types, as they both prefer Ne over Ni.

Still, the Ni exists. Everyone possess all 8 of the functions. The Ni is merely repressed by the preference or Ne.

Marcus will beat the shit out of nietzcuck in a fight.

Stoicism is the worst, most meme philosophy. Sadly, it's among those with whom Veeky Forums has a seemingly constant love affair.

At least pick one of the GOOD meme ones, like Diogenes-tier Cynicism.

Then get the fuck outta my sunlight.

Then why aren't you out in the streets? Why are you using a computer to communicate with us? You can espouse the logic of a Cynic way of life all you want - though if you're not practicing it, the 'superiority' of your Cynicism remains irrelevant.

cynicism is for retards who still believe that it's possible to be cynical without reference to the crowd. and you know this is true. because if you really wanted to live in a barrel you wouldn't feel the need to say so. you would be indifferent. you are not indifferent. it's why a person can never get to the end of saying they don't care

there is no escape from others hombre. even diogenes went through the streets at night looking for an honest man. he wasn't as neat & tidy as you think. and stirner is a cornball too

I never said I was a cynic.

I said if you want to adopt a meme philosophy, which stoicism certainly is, then you should at least pick a good one.

See above.

What is a better alternative I really need to know

>meme philosophy
lovely critical thought put into your post, thank you

Thank you, I appreciate it. I have to admit, while I find ISTPs fascinating, my grasp on how they see things is more tenuous than on the NT or NF types.

That said, I have an ISTJ sister, and suspect a friend of being an ISTP, so I do have some thoughts on them.

You can take this test for starters, if you'd like.

celebritytypes.com/test/intp-or-istp.php

The function stacks for ISTP are Ti, Se, Ni, Fe.

This means everything begins in the world of thinking. As I mentioned to the other user, Ti is a contemplative function.

Extraverted Sensing, however, is the function most connected with the present physical moment.

A direct connection between Ti and Se then, leads thinking to have a very strong grasp of the physical world, and actually creates and interesting loop. Ti, an inward turning function, gets refocused on the outer world before being sent back inward to tertiary Ni.

Ni, Introverted Intuition, is my dominant function so I'm very familiar with it. It is a largely subconscious process of synthesis of information.

Whereas Extraverted Intuition works in a condensing fashion, taking objects presented and seeing if connections can be drawn between them - working from the many to the one, Ni works like a person following threads outward from the center of a spider's web - one to the many.

In a tertiary role in direct connection to Extraverted Sensing, that means the subconscious processing taking place is about the surrounding world in a very direct sense. Dominant Thinking ultimately pilots the ISTP, and with the Ni so far down it functions more like an instinct or gut feelings than anything else.

The repressed function is Fe, Extraverted Feeling. Extraverted Feeling is a social harmonizing function. The more dominant it is in a person, the more they are focused on the feelings of others, establishing and maintaining an atmosphere, and things of that nature.

In a repressed role, that means the ISTP has an innate desire for social harmony, but a rudimentary awareness of it.

All types are ultimately striving to establish a harmony between the dominant and repressed functions, so the more mature the person the less these flaws may be visible.

Contrasted with an INTP, I think the main difference would be an ISTP's aversion to conceptualizing and theorizing because of their auxiliary Se, which gives them a preference for the concrete and the real over the theoretical.

INTPs, on the other hand, prefer conceptualizing and systematizing - so long as it is done in a highly logical fashion. They have Se somewhat repressed, so this makes them far less action oriented than ISTPs.

I hope that helps. I would recommend checking out Micheal Pierce's videos for those types as well.

Thank you. I'm glad it was helpful. I look up to a large number of men and women, but here are a few.

>Yeats
>Tennyson
>Basho
>Blake, his artwork especially
>Plato
>Epictetus
>Lewis Carroll
>Tolkien
>C.S. Lewis
>Carl Jung, because I doubt I would have had his insight into the human mind even if I had studied millions of patients.
>M.C. Escher
>Bach
>Handel
>Scarlatti
>Faure
>Bartok
>Newton
>Einstein
>Luis Bunuel
>David Lynch
>Wakamatsu Koji
>Itou Junji
>Osamu Tezuka
>Ron Mueck
>Elon Musk
>Anna Wierzbicka

I really could go on all day probably. Most of these are fairly standard too, but, still, I admire them greatly for one reason or another.

so silly.

>i love diogenes, we should be like him
>i'm not a cynic tho

then
>you should choose a good meme philosophy
>implying that a good meme philosophy is anything but a paradox
>implying this isn't also just more cynicism
>implying you are not back pedaling like a motherfucker after getting called out on some BS

seriously, it's like trying to have a debate with a four-year-old. every answer we will give you will seem wrong to you because you don't know what the fuck you mean in the first place and this is patently obvious to everyone except you. so you're going to shitpost about how we don't understand you ad infinitum like a retard

cynics are the worst. even you don't believe what you're saying. it's everyone who is wrong and yet you're the one who lives in a barrel. in the meantime the emperor is out killing barbarians and writing the meditations in a tent but this is all just inexplicable to you. ridiculous

try living in a barrel in the dark ages. see how long before some gothic horseman bends you over. rome won't seem so bad then

>in the meantime the emperor is out killing barbarians and writing the meditations in a tent

You mean the 'Emperor' who was on the run whilst losing everything he won and more.

What an """inspiration"""

pretty sure rome didn't end that day famalam. or a century later when aurelian broke a boot off in the ass of barbarian scum on three continents to hold the empire together. was it worth it? hard to say. but the opinions of cynics are worthless. they are antisocial justice warriors. that puts them one half-step above SJWs and a million steps below people who grant you the right to live as you please so long as you don't break the laws

it's okay to hate the world. i do too. but i don't call it enlightenment. cynicism is not a philosophy. it is living in a barrel-sized nutshell and pretending to be the king of the universe

you cannot convince me. I cannot convince you. but the barrel you are in is contained within the city and not the other way around, however much you would like to think so

for better or for worse were all in his thing together. whether you like it or not

I e always been somewhat stoic, I just never knew it had a name... Other than Being called boring.

It is definitely a valuable outlook although I can't say I'm a perfect stoic but I do try if only for the sake of not stressing out.

Do you ever feel compelled to throw it away because peoples emotions are so overt and they wear them on their sleeves so easilky? This has been annoying me for a while now, how quick to anger, rage, sadness, annoyance etc. People are. Emotional outbursts in seconds.

I feel the annoyance inside but I never get emotional myself, mostly because I know it leads to nothing good but I'm having a hard time accepting how emotionally o er the top people are.

So much for common people sharing the present.
