In proper English corn is a general term for cereal crops such as barley, wheat, emmer and whatever the fuck else people grow.
In Yank speak corn is the word for maize, a crop indigenous to America and not introduced to Europe until after the Colombian exchange.
In his book Caesar referred a lot to corn when talking about logistics which made a lot of American readers scratch their head in confusion.
