What does Veeky Forums think of eReaders...

What does Veeky Forums think of eReaders? All these stack threads make me feel like the majority of Veeky Forums reads books just to place them on a bookshelf and brag that they read "like, a bunch."

I slightly prefer reading on paper, but I do like a few things about ereaders, namely:
-they hold your place for you without needing a bookmark
-can take a lot of books with you on a trip without carrying them
-can download books for free from your local library or from less-reputable websites

And OP, stack threads are just a way of saying "what are you reading right now? what do you think of it?" But since we're on an IMAGEboard, it makes sense to use an image to depict it.

I just like books better, but if there is a book that is way cheaper or only available in digital format I don't mind as much. My eyes may get more fatigue than with paper tho.

Well, what I meant about stack threads is that people are all showing the exact same stuff. Everyone's reading The Trial, The Republic, or Notes From The Underground.

They're not discussion threads, and very rarely is something new being added; it's just people showing off that they read classic literature with a post mocking Wallace or bait stating Ulysses is a terrible novel.

There's a reason everyone reads Republic though
>inb4 user didn't start with the greeks

I've read it, I'm saying that these threads are pointless because everyone's read it.

The stack threads are mainly children that want to show off. I only buy a physical book if it's a textbook or the formatting is so bad on my ereader that it isn't worth reading on it.

E-Readers are so much more convenient, I often get ebook versions of physical copies I have so I can read it away from home, but physical books can have illustrations and weird typography, and of course not all editions or >translations are on ereaders

is there any ereader with yellow pages? i fucking hate white pages

If I could exchange all my physical books for digital I would, save a few really nice copies I have, and some books which require some flipping back and forth.

I would have so much more room.

i used to use my kindle keyboard a lot but now i just use my phone

I have an e-reader. I read a lot on it, but I only use it to read stuff I don't have in print.
The experience is still not quite the same that said. I do still enjoy physical books more. I can't quite put my finger on the reason, and I wouldn't dare to say something mystical or astrological as being it... I guess a sense of chronological progression? It's weird. I guess tactile functions and perception plays a role, otherwise receiving information would be the same regardless of the medium, and we would only hear robot read audiobooks.

Anyway, I recommend them always, I think they are worth it, after all they are as expensive as 10 cheap printed books, so it pays off in less than a year if you pirate.
I don't think they can replace books entirely though.

Most stack threads are filled with "new readers", people that like to read but just recently started going deeper into it. And most buy things that are recommended here, so of course it's mostly the same thing.

E-readers are fine. I have a Kindle.

I enjoy the permanence of books. You really have to try to be rid of them. As a prepper, off grid living aspirant and /k/ommando, the thought of depending on magic pixies to propagate the arts and sciences in my desert compound after a calamity is very unsettling.

OP's asking about ereaders in general, not specifically ereaders made by a particularly assholish giant corporation.

This. At least have physical backups of important books.

Got one for christmas and I've been reading more than before.
Big plus is being able to read in the dark and while lying on my side

honestly, i'd buy books and be disappointed half way through and then it just becomes clutter. now I can fucking pirate all kinds of books and if I like the book, I'd want a physical copy to put on the shelf.

E-readers fuck my eyes tbqh.

Prefer books. But I can see the convenience of e-readers.

How did they fuck your eyes? I thought they were supposed to mimic real ink on paper and not just light shining in your face

With a basic kindle, the background is grey. Not so glaring, eh.

I was just looking at the kobo aura second edition and they do have it:

I'm in a constant state of indecision. I have a Kindle paperwhite and really like it: books for free, read in the dark, easy and portable.

I still crave paperbacks though, I feel like its some kind of identity thing. Part of the appeal of the book is owning the physical item or something...

I think that, for the moment, i'll only buy books if they are used and cost less than 2 GBP, otherwise ill download :)

>I thought they were supposed to mimic real ink on paper and not just light shining in your face

I guess they are trying to do that, but I tried reading Bram Stoker's Dracula on my brother's Paperwhite a while back and it wasn't comfortable.

I can't really explain why.

Not trying to discredit you or anything btw, I also think e-readers miss something, but I can't quite explain why. I think the brain just knows that it's not real paper, I find words easier absorbable when its on real paper instead of screen.

You realize that you can obtain almost any novel for free digitally, right?

Sounds like you have an inferior brain

Or it's superior because it's able to discern real and fake

>Not being able to manipulate the world with your brain as to see ebooks as actual books
Puny brain power. sad!

>only reading novels
Actually this is one major issue with ebooks in my experience. Books with footnotes can be hell.

Please stop making me feel inferior, I do not like this feeling when you make me feel this way. I want to feel good feelings, man.

You are a good person and Veeky Forums is proud of you

this post summarises the experience of being on this board

It was probably just turned up too high.
>tfw I have a Paperwhite and am also currently reading Dracula

E-books are just as real as paper books. The problem is that you are letting some made-up criterion of what's real to limit what you can do.

Just power through the first few books, and then the discomfort and the messages that it is not real enough will go away. It's a matter of habit.

I was wondering about buying an ereader. I never had one but I accumulated so many ebooks I'd like to read and reading on the screen of a computer or a tablet for as much time as it would take me to read them seems like a torture.

I was wondering about kobo glo HD since it's much cheaper thank any kindle where I live and I don't care about the access to amazon and whatnot because muh ebook piracy.
Got any advice lads?

I usually buy Kindles because they are actually cheaper than Kobos where I live (from a quick search, it looks like they are cheaper everywhere, where are you?) but there shouldn't be much difference. Actually, the Kobo has the advantage of supporting epub and it seems to have a more customizable interface and better functionality.

As for the Amazon services you are forfeiting, you won't really lose much. You may regret not being able to buy some cheap ebook that no one has pirated yet, but that's all. Amazon unlimited is basically shit, and has been since the beginning. It's mostly porn for females a la Twilight / 50shades, and shitty self-help books that copy each other and always says the same things.

I'm in Poland
the price difference might be a thing because there is no amazon in poland - you can use amazon but it all goes through the german branch and the prices are perhaps calculated for german market? I don't know.
It boild down to the fact that kindle paperwhite costs nearly twice as much as kobo glo hd
