A lot of the authors I started reading to impress people turned into the authors I enjoy.

it is still lying if you're telling people you enjoy it, which I assumed you're doing. The point is at least people ASSUME you enjoy reading them so you must be a smart person. Anyone could trudge through any book, they just assume you wouldn't do it if you weren't a smrty-pants. So that's morally as bad as lying

Enjoy Wallace, Ben Lerner, shit like that

Impress Wolf, Joyce, shit like that

For no reason Michael Well-Beck, why read shit like that

everything i read i enjoy.

like bible, like joyce, like psychedelic experience, like nietzsche and so on,

You're supposed to enjoy books?

I only read for enjoyment.

I don't seek the approval of people who judge you based on what books you've read.

Those people are fags.

To any of those people reading this; You are a fag.

>Enjoy:

- McCarthy
- Nabokov

>Impress:

I like reading difficult or esoteric stuff because its different and experimental anyways, but the books i enjoy the most aren't usually overly complicated. Just sincere or transgressive.

Biographies are fucking great though seriously. Its awesome to inform your readings, to learn about an author or composers creative habits, and it gives you so much to talk about. You can learn everything that made Nabokov who he is, what his books mean authoritatively, and all that stuff.

+ composer biographies teach theory to a degree.

I've never read a book, watch a movie or anything like that to impress people. I know a lot of anons do, but it's so alien to me I can't really comprehend how they do it. How can you watch two hours or read for weeks something just for the sake of looking like something you are not. I mean, every minute of it must feel really sick and make you hate yourself.

Have you read The Noise of Time?

Unfortunately I haven't spent a lot of time on Shosti yet. I was hoping to get his autobiography some time but its apparently very rare. + there's controversy over its authorship.

I try to avoid the more glossy / succinct biographies incase they leave out something, but Shostakovitch is so prolofic and interesting a good bio is going to be 1000+ pages long probably.

So far I've read mostly on Mahler, Ravel, Debussy, Prokofiev, and Beethoven. Bit on Bach too, but I was surprised to learn that info on him is pretty fucking sparse since he wasn't well acclaimed in his lifetime.

But Barnes is pretty good, I might check it out. So thanks for the mention m8.

I haven't read it myself, but reading it as a biography is probably like reading Flaubert's Parrot as a biography of Flaubert.
What's a good Mahler bio? Big fan of the guy.

This one is very nice and comprehensive + split up on history of Vienna as well as individual pieces that he composed. I like the way its structured.

The more compact one that I have is (amazon.ca/Mahler-Man-Music-Egon-Gartenberg/dp/0304300586/ref=sr_1_29?ie=UTF8&qid=1484067711&sr=8-29&keywords=mahler biography)

Which is not nearly as comprehensive or historically focused, but gives you a good overview of the meat of his life and work.

Fun Anecdote:
One of these writes about how Beethoven reportedly hid indoors with pillows over his ears when Vienna was under siege because he feared for his hearing getting even worse from cannon fire.

>dur hur people who seek approval by reading books are fags.
>Therefore don't seeking approval bring pride.
>Post about it so everyone can see how much of an independient and uninterested i am on what people think about me.
>I seeked approval.
