Probiotic General Thread

What do you think about the emerging science of probiotics and understanding this general subject.

Genetic sequencing is making it more possible to analyze the microbiome of the human being.

- Anyone on sci study this are of science?
- Anyone on sci take or use probiotics?
- Anyone have predictions about the near future 5-10 years of this field?

Anyone interested?

are any of their benefits scientifically backed or is it just like the nootropics meme?

It's probably something that isn't altered heavily by simple pill taking but also requires changing in diets.

AKA taking a probiotic pill is probably pointless if you are eating tons of greasy and sugary drinks. I think there is potentially benefit but it requires more work vs pills.

to clarify the intuition point (aka worthless) is that of course microbiome is important but the pills are probably minimal. I'm sure someone could do an experiment created some type of environmental similar to a digestive system and show introducing the pill of bacteria has minimal effects.

I've only got very minimal personal experience in the area but taking a good amount of probiotics did significantly alter my shits for a few weeks.

It's going to be one of those things we discover is unbelievably important one day. Right now we are probably "lobotomizing" our guts compared to the future of this tech/science.

Take fecal transplants instead

Well, the thread was kinda supposed to everything related to human microbiome.

I drink blueberry kefir based on anecdotal evidence (plain is too sour for me). I find the microbiome interesting, although their isn't too much research available and most of the information out their is from unreliable sources.

I study neuroscience, I'd be interested to see if the gut biome can be manipulated as an alternative to psychotic medication

It sucks ass though because we are so in the dark about it and how to properly control it.

i had a bad flu a couple of weeks ago and the doctor said i should take a probiotic. i bought the cheapest no-name one available. after the flu was done i kept taking them, and i've been having 1 god-tier morning poop daily since. don't know if there are more factors at work, but i know that before i took them my movements were less consistent.

>and i've been having 1 god-tier morning poop daily since.
indeed.

I take 500mg of yeast ''Saccharomyces cerevisiae'' each meal. I take those alive, otherwise the dead yeast do nothing.

Those give me 1 solid poop each morning, better nails, the hair stop smelling bad, but they are still greasy.

I also take 400mg of artichoke each meal. Those stops little red nonpurulent zits on the face but it messes up with the nice solid poop if too much is taken.

I still have not found something for the greasy hair, besides accutane.

what is a good probiotics against acne for westerners after accutane?

L. rhamnosus has some studies suggesting benefits

I always wondered why probiotics aren't used much in hospitals or post-shower. Seems like a spray form of good skin bacteria after a shower or just spraying the fuck out of a hospital or surgery area with good bacteria would make sense.

If it keeps vaginas from getting fucked up why don't we use it on everything?

>What do you think about the emerging science of probiotics and understanding this general subject.
I think its essential for our long-term health as a species that solely relies on symbiotic relationships with microbiota which survive in our microbiomes. A microbiome is an ecosystem for microbiota.

>Anyone on sci study this are of science?
I haven't done too much study on this topic I wrote an essay in my frist year, my specialized shit ain't microbiology.
I know there's been evidence to suggest pertubation of the microbiome of the gut can lead to stomach ulcers, stomach cancer and autism in some cases, there's also evidence to suggest that the greatest medical advancement ever in history - basic fucking hygiene is potentially damaging the microbiomes of modern humans e.g soap alters the pH of skin making it a dreadful place for actinobacteria to survive, couple this with the fact that hygiene has become this elaborate flashy ratrace for money pyrimid scheme where basically the the fallout of this is the microbiota of humans is now being disturbed to no end.

The symbiosis of microbiota is interesting, microbiota of the gut evolved to break down starchy carbohydrates in plants in early mammals from then on we've almost always relied on them for our diets the microbiomes of skin, small instestine even the lungs are a microbiome.

We know lifestyle factors like diet alter the microbiome severely, I have high hopes for research into this topic in the future hopefully with the knowledge gathered from this topic a healthy diet can cure serious diseases that otherwise would be treated with unneeded side effect causing medication.

>Anyone on sci take or use probiotics?
I used to eat those disgusting fucking yakults when I was younger but i'm pretty satisfied with a half decent diet my microbiomes should be balanced.

For one, not everyone has the same microbiome. Only 40% is shared.

Probiotics are recommended if you're on antibiotics though.

Check this out!

Yesterday around 7pm I went to the supermarket and I saw this stuff being advertised as a health-ade called Kombucha. I purchased two bottles of the stuff - the original and the cayenne pepper one. I went home not knowing what to expect from the drinks. Based on the dark color, and the fact that they were next to the fruit drinks, I was hoping that it would be some sort of sweet drink. Boy, was I wrong. The first sip of Kombucha made me think WHAT IN THE FUCK! It was so disgusting and vile, but I drank the entire bottle regardless because it's supposed to be healthy. I didn't notice any difference from the probiotic drink, but I'm gonna drink the cayenne one today. The taste is something so far off of my taste palette that I would be down to drink it regularly just to get a mini adrenaline rush from its rankness.

Also, I read up a little bit on it. Apparently its a bunch of fermented mushrooms. Don't know anymore then that.

Probiotics should be taken after the antibiotics, because they don't just kill the bad bacteria, they kill a lot of the good bacteria, but wait until after the antibiotics because they will destroy the probiotic. Also recommend always switching month to month to different formulas because like you said, only a % is shared.

This. Find a nice healthy young boy and scoop some of his poop out with your dick and put it in your ass.

Kombucha tastes pretty good for me desu

>Anyone interested?
yes.

An interesting thought;
Antibiotics are just the extracted defense chemicals excreted by specific bacteria. Many bacteria excrete these bactericidal chemicals, l. reuteri excretes reuterin a bactericidal chemical as one example.

the symbiosis between human and gut zoo is multi faceted, including as it does the immune system as well as neurochemicals and precursors to neurochemicals
>Several molecules with neuroactive functions such as gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), serotonin, catecholamines and acetylcholine have been reported to be microbially-derived, many of which have been isolated from bacteria within the human gut.
ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24997036

I recall a study recently where the gut zoo of stroke patients was studied and found to change because of the chemical feedback loops between brain and gut.
>A bidirectional link between the brain and the gut can improve or worsen brain injury in mice, researchers report.
the-scientist.com/?articles.view/articleNo/46557/title/Stroke-Alters-Gut-Microbiome--Impacting-Recovery/

bopn

>have skin rash on dick for longer than is acceptable due to microtears and bad bacteria
>decide to carpet bomb with soap and rubbing alcohol
>repeat every day
>doesn't help much due to near instant reinfection of bad bacteria
>apply plain yogurt
>worked

I can't personally vouch for anything else.

>Stroke-Alters-Gut-Microbiome--Impacting-Recovery

Fascinating shit.

>>apply plain yogurt
for how long per application and how long in months/

I would guess microbiota of the gut in pregnant mothers play a significant role in fetal development

Probiotic supplements seem like a meme to me. I've taken some of the top of the line formulas, and they're great; for as long as you continue taking them. If you eat a varied diet high in indigestible fibers such oligosacharrides, minimize alcohol consumption and include lots of vegetables, your gut will take care of itself. For example, asperagas, jerasalem artichokes, raw onions, beans, most cruciferous vegetables and some cereal grains all have fiber that will feed the bacteria in your gut. Also human breast milk is packed with oligosacharrides, pretty interesting.

As far as skin bacterium, stop using so much soap. My acne went away completely years ago when I stopped washing my face. When you use soap, you strip the skin of oils and lower the pH. If you want to fix it, try apple cider vinegar. Dilute it 50/50 in warm water and splash on your face, keep those eyes shut tight, then rinse off several minutes later. Leaves you glowing and feeling fresh.

it's the rubbing alcohol. You don't put that stuff on damaged skin. That'll only make it worse.

>Had an appendectomy before
>Lots of complications
>Was put under shit loads of antibiotics
>Shits haven't been the same ever since
I don't believe for a second this will help but I'm gonna get me some probiotics as a last attempt before seeing a specialist.

You also have to feed the gut bacteria with fiber and nutrients that they like. So that means eating lots of fruits and vegetables. I think it takes only a week for them to die out if you stop eating fresh fruits and vegetables. Make sure to eat your green vegetables especially leafy greens and to eat fiber rich fruits and vegetables.

I think they are looking at great selling success.
People dont even bother eating an apple anymore they are too "busy" for it.
I am ok with it,eventually nature will sort this individuals out because of they lifestyle.
If you can be bothered to eat like a normal person this supplements are for you.

>Fascinating shit.
important shit.
your gut zoo helps determine your health as well as your behaviour
There is a paper that came out several years back that deals with the fact that humans are super-organisms that have evolved with many varieties of bacteria, fungus and virus in a symbiotic relationship.
>Humans as Superorganisms: How Microbes, Viruses, Imprinted Genes, and Other Selfish Entities Shape Our Behavior. ~ Kramer & Bressan

>for as long as you continue taking them.
>I think it takes only a week for them to die out
I'm looking for the study I just read on persistence of probiotics and from what I recall you are correct. The study said every day vs. every other day dosage was equivalent but the probiotic bacteria's presence in the stool begins to decline just a few days after last dosage.
>You also have to feed the gut bacteria with fiber and nutrients that they like.
avoiding high dosages of alcohol is as important if not more important for keeping the zoo alive.
