I don't think she's honest at all. Her poetry may be laughably maudlin, but that's solely to service the pretense of honesty. It's why her metaphors and aphorisms are so fucking embarrassingly contrived, because they are painstakingly constructed to be just mawkish enough to bolster the illusion of a mortifying sincerity. I think the back of her book is a very on-the-nose illustration of this. You might call her a great satirist, but the end isn't to remain detached and poke fun at the lame sentimentality of a shitty poet but to consciously inhabit it in its entirety.

If you could imagine someone reading that David Foster Wallace quote about how being "naive and gooey and pathetic" is what it is to be actually human, and that person making the voluntary artistic choice to uphold the image that notion entails, you'd probably have Rupi Kaur.
