Just read works on those subjects, and read philosophy. The same rules apply, generally.
Any suggested reading list or key texts worth looking at for starters?

Opinions here, but most anime is Japanese, right?
Try to understand the themes of Japanese culture. I've realized that they are obsessed with protection. They see themselves as defenders, hate aggression, and can justify anything as long as it falls under the ideals of self-sacrifice to "protect" something. They REALLY stretch what protecting something means, it's not just the physical, they want to protect emotions, standards, expectations, memories, you name it.
Family and obligation, as well as their social expectations for each other are all common cultural themes. Their language has many dedicated words for specifying grades of familiarity and they read between the lines in social interaction with a great intensity because their social practices are extremely repressive and constraining.
This creates a fascination with the rebellious hero who is unburdened by those standards or satisfies them in alternative ways such as humiliating themselves to protect someone else's secrets, etc.
Once you start recognizing these behaviors, it isn't too difficult to start putting together a picture of their general philosophy.

Just shut the fuck up idiot weeb. You don't know the first thing about Japan. Anime is marketed to NEET losers like you who pretend they know what constitutes Japanese culture in a shitpost thread on a literature subreddit of SJWchan.
