Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. Can you provide said evidence?

what do they mean when they say "the universe is flat"? We live in a 3D universe. Do they just mean that two dimensions are so infinitely long that the "depth" might not even bother being considered, or what? I always imagined the universe as kind of cubic or as an infinite cylinder.

FIFTEEN hundred years ago everybody knew the Earth was the center of the universe. Five hundred years ago, everybody knew the Earth was flat, and one 5.39 × 10^-44'th of a second ago your consciousness was still playing the game. Imagine what you'll will know tomorrow.

Didn't know astronauts had the ability to see in 3D.

Your timescale is all fucked up - the catholic church never held to the notion that the Earth was flat, but they did think that the Earth may be the center of the universe until less than five hundred years ago, though that's not the fault of the church, it was more of a fault of the Greeks.

What they mean by "flat" is that the geometry of space time is the same of that of euclidean space (parallel lines don't intersect, in spherical geometry they always do and in hyperbolic geometry you can have a line, a point not on that line, and infinitely many parallel lines passing through that point), that picture illustrates the point.

thanks!

The Earth isn't round, that's a 3 dimensional property. The earth is at least 4 dimensional, so it's probably floump, the 4-d analogue to a sphere.

You have confused yourself as to which clain is the extraordinary one.

>Five hundred years ago, everybody knew the Earth was flat

That is incorrect.

Remember when they taught you in school the "Columbus believed the Earth was round and everybody else thought it was flat but he proved it was round?"

That story is completely fucked up.

Everybody knew the Earth was round.

Everybody knew about how big it was.

Given the size of the Earth, and the ship technology of the day, it was not really feasable to try to get to the Orient by sailing west from Europe.

Columbus, due to doing his maths wrong, believed the Earth was much smaller than it is and that he could lead a fleet west to arrive in Asia. Convinced Spainto take a risk and finance his trying to prove it. (Portugal pretty much owned knowledge of the seas between Europe and Asia by going around Africa, Spain wanted a cut of that market and risking Chris was a cheap way to try and get it.)

There was new land in the way, slightly further than Chris had hoped Asia would be but close enough that he just managed to reach it alive with his fleet.

Not noticing that NOTHING he was seeing looked like China or India or Japan, he proclaimed himself in Asia and a genius and headed back to Portugal with some yams and some Indians, so named because maybe he was in India.

Eventually folks figured out that Columbus was wrong about the size of the Earth, and Asia was as far away as everybody had thought, but that he'd found some new lands to explore/exploit/colonize.etc. Pope grants rights to the new land to Spain and Portugal, everything east of a certain line is Portuguese (and so the speak Portuguese in Brazil today) and everything to the West is Spain's (and so they speak Spanish in the rest of Latin America. English dogs are protestant, ignore the pope, and set up colonies in North America.

In a twist of fate, the whole New World is named America, after some guy who did not discover the New World or ever even visit it.
