How does one go about seeing reading as a hobby rather than a chore? I do not read enough literature, never have, and anytime I pick up a book and try to read it, I only get a few chapters in before I start feeling anxiety over the large amount of pages left to read. I enjoy TV and video games, as well as mindlessly surfing the web, but when it comes to reading a novel, I just cannot stay focused. Any advice? I want to read, and I want to enjoy it. Sometimes I feel as though I have some ADD, though I have never been diagnosed. I aced all my English courses in high school and college, and I am a decent writer and actually enjoy writing when I have to. But I cannot and never have enjoyed reading. What is wrong with me?

Stop watching TV and playing vidya and learn to focus. Try meditation, that helps.

>I am a decent writer
>I cannot and never have enjoyed reading

pick one bucko

Find a book you like

you are a big retard, there is no saving you m8

Listening to music while reading helps me focus on what I'm reading (instrumental stuff obviously).

I try to read at least one average-length album's worth of time a day. The problem is, it takes me like 45 minutes to read 20-30 pages. I can finish 100 pages in a week, so it's not too bad, but it still feels slow for me (and probably is compared to others here).

the average poster here read 2 Wikipedia summaries a week so you're doing pretty well. keep it up senpai speed comes naturally with practice.

>I start feeling anxiety over the large amount of pages left to read. I
e-book

Internet usage makes you addicted to constant stimulation, which negatively affects attention.

Watch this:

If you don't want to watch the entire thing, he begins to drive the point home at around 11:40

Thank you for sharing this with everyone sir. I remember my one philosophy professor including a reading by him as part of one of our ethics courses. Now I wish I could only remove myself from this Mongolian Meme Market long enough to actually accomplish anything with my life.

>If you don't want to watch the entire thing
Helpful AND ironic.

Sometimes I wish there was a tl;dr for my entire life.

You can write it yourself on your deathbed senpai

This is really interesting. I think I genuinely want to attempt to go without internet (barring the absolute necessities like work email) and see how long I can do it, and if it helps me focus more on reading (and other artistic mediums such as music).

Don't try to read whole books at once. Try pacing yourself.
Start by reading one chapter a day. if the chapters are long or you're a slow reader, try 15-20 minutes of sustained reading.

If you find that you want to read more, and hopefully you will get to a point where you want to read more, go ahead and read until you're tired. Reading is a skill, so over time you'll find that it gets easier and easier.

Start with short books

>How does one go about seeing reading as a hobby rather than a chore?
by reading shit youre actually interested in. if that happens to be sci-fi then so be it; some of us happen to enjoy Shakespeare.

not everyone was born to be great

You should try it. I spent a year without a connection and went to a cafe when I needed to use email and such. I did a lot of reading, writing, played music and lots of other stuff. Nothing of value was lost.

>barring the absolute necessities like work email
this is what kills me. ill be stuck on it anyways so whats the point

and yet youre back

So what if I'm back? I'm not an addict.

...

this is pretty much me. instrumental music helps a lot. i read about as fast as you as well.

>How does one go about seeing working out as a hobby rather than a chore? I do not exercise enough, never have, and anytime I pick up a routine and try to keep to it, I only get a few days in before I start feeling anxiety over the all the exercise I need to do before seeing results. I enjoy TV and video games, as well as mindlessly surfing the web, but when it comes to working out, I just cannot stay focused. Any advice? I want to exercise, and I want to enjoy it. Sometimes I feel as though I have some ADD, though I have never been diagnosed. I aced all my gym courses in high school and college, and I am a decent jogger and actually enjoy jogging when I have to. But I cannot and never have enjoyed working out. What is wrong with me?

You are not acting as a free man because you lack direction and training of the mind so you are a slave to your senses. INFANTILISM. Many such cases!

Just look itt, oh its the dopamine, oh you should adopt such and such strategy. It's all the same. Every thread. People just keep missing the key point, freedom, and I don't know whether to feel sad or lmao. Anyways I wouldn't listen to any of it if I were you

if you don't want to read, then don't, i'm not your fucking mother

Succinctly put and just what people like OP need to hear until they grow the heck up already.

Sounds like you're just reading to try and look smart you stupid fucking frogposter.
>muh undiagnosed ADD
Nice excuse. It's literally made up, it's creator even admitted it.

Its not enough to want to enjoy reading, you have to develop some kind of genuine interest. Don't just read books because you feel like you "should" be reading a certain type of book.

Good idea, maybe I'll have the tl;dr on my tombstone.

>don't wash the dishes, they're only going to get dirty again
That's some frustrated teen logic there, user.

>don't do X because you think you should
Why the fuck not? I started going to the gym and hated it at first, now I genuinely love doing it moderately. I have trained myself to enjoy something that is healthy and makes me look better. Can be applied to anything.

It's called self improvement, maybe you should try it sometime.

>>don't do X because you think you should
I never said that.

OK, my bad. I'll keep ranting anyway because I've got nothing better to do.

Even to read just to try to LOOK smart, so be it. People can use their social perspective of themselves to create a character morality that then motivates their agenda for personal change.

There is nothing wrong with "pretending" to read Veeky Forums if you are also actually reading the words, because it's possible to train the genuine interest.

...

I don't disagree with your points, but what I was trying to say is that OP might be more engaged with his reading if he cultivated an interest in the subject of literature (for example by watching lectures or reading up on literary theory or criticism)

The Force Awakens is shit.

Fair enough, and that can be fuel for the kind of motivation I'm talking about. Carry on, sir.

Thanks.

This but I enjoy reading. I loved Moby-Dick because the chapters were so short, also I mostly read short story collections

>ADD is made up even the creator admitted it
[citation needed]

Who cares, that user is an idiot.

Democracy is made up, doesn't mean we should just pretend it doesn't exist.

>How does one go about seeing reading as a hobby rather than a chore?
By seeing it as a hobby.
>I do not read enough literature ... anytime I pick up a book and try to read it ... I start feeling anxiety over the amount of pages left
You're not motivated by the desire to explore and enjoy a previously neglected hobby, you're not thinking about relaxing with an individual book or enjoying the journey, you're focused solely on "catching up" (you're not in a race, OP), to read through your personal collection as fast as possible to correct a non-issue (I do not read enough literature). This is detrimental, ADD isn't the problem, whether you have it or not, it's your mindset. Re-examine your situation, why are you trying to speed read instead of taking your time, relaxing, and enjoying whatever book you're currently reading? You have all the time in the world.
>I enjoy TV and video games
Quit both, keep up with your normie friends' TV shows for social reasons, otherwise these are both time sinks since nothing important is ever on TV and video games kill time, money, and social standing (unless your group of bros and/or normie friends and/or your gf has some game she wants to play with you). If it sounds too hard to do cold turkey watch TGSNT, listen to Dr. William Pierce's broadcasts (especially Haiti, Rhodesia, and Collective Suicide), spend some time researching related topics and you'll never care about games, TV shows, fiction, entertainment, ever again.
>ADD
If your attention span, focus, retention, are all bad and you daydream or zone out a lot, I'd advise you check that out. Though, remember if you don't exercise, eat healthy, drink water your cognitive function will deteriorate as well as your body. Study after study shows, other than schools as well as society as a whole becoming more feminized, boys that are physically active are able to focus and stay seated in class while those who don't struggle to do both.
>Anxiety
If you're not referring to the feeling of anxiety but actually suffer from anxiety (GAD, Panic Disorder, Social Anxiety, etc.) get meds, what you fear will happen WILL HAPPEN which is why you can't waste time being nervous or in fear. I worried I'd lose my gf, now she's my ex, I had so many chances at getting her back but I blew it because I was imagining the worst possible things, if you have anxiety take meds because, although you won't be killed by some crazed robber or the monster you were spooked about as a kid, in situations where you're worried you're bothering someone and focusing solely on that, YOU'RE BOTHERING THEM. When you're worried you're fucking up, YOU ARE BECAUSE YOU'RE WORRIED ABOUT FUCKING UP. Mindset is to confidence what nutrition is to weight lifting: without a controlled mind you can't be confident.

>Mindset
Don't procrastinate, "now" not "tomorrow."
What you worry about happening WILL HAPPEN. Blind faith creates fearlessness.
Replace I HOPE/HAVE/NEED with I WILL.
Replace IF I with WHEN I.

10/10 thanks bro

Also if you're masturbating, stop. You're not sacrificing anything, it's not hard to refrain from indulging yourself like some sort of zoo animal. Porn and masturbation along with video games have completely destroyed the generations that grew up in it, people come up with the dumbest arguments against it, usually religious or just irrelevant points. The reason masturbation is an absolutely shameful "addiction" for people to have is because unlike hunger, unlike drugs, unlike alcohol, this is just dopamine. People have become so weak that they're addicted to dopamine bursts, and are willing to use their own body's resources to constantly produce semen to shoot into a napkin, you're literally killing yourself, turning your body into Soviet Russia during WWII, everyone is starving, dying in gulags, society crumbling, because the occupying force (though unlike Jewish Bolsheviks, the force occupying these people is a single dick tingle) has decided to convert the entire nation into one massive factory (in this case an endless production of sperm) and destroying everything and everyone within and without because of it. It's not just protein that goes into semen, your brain and your testicles share some of the same resources, your body will sacrifice whatever it needs to in order for your genitals to function as the purpose of life is to fulfill our role in the long chain of ancestors connected to us by name and blood: to ensure the continuation of that chain by finding the best mate to bed, wed, and live with, and together as a team fulfill your natural role within said team with the team's sole focus set to granting your children the best upbringing (i.e. natural, traditional) humanly possible. You won't be able to do any of that if you're wasting time by looking at pictures, watching videos, and playing with yourself like a monkey instead of giving both of those up so that the resources you used to steal from your body and give to the trash or flush down the toilet, is used by your brain and body, and that sexual, primal energy instead being used in creative and passionate pursuits. You don't leave a mark on the world by staining a napkin, nor do you become great by watching literally a Jewish PSYOP (no, you can't just take a peak) which alongside thin plastic bottles tainting your drink with estrogen or cheap shitty unhealthy garbage that also has preservatives and/or ingredients that once broken down turn into estrogen inside your body, the nu-male doesn't look like an androgynous freak because of an absent father, absent (left), hard working (gone in the morning, comes home at night too late to interact with you), inactive (beta (r-select due to his father), uncaring, abusive, etc.) fathers create r-select offspring (single moms and weak/absent dads = r-select; normal (natural, traditional) parents create k-select & natural offspring; strong and active single dads = extremely stoic k-select offspring).

anytime.

...

Pseudo science nonsense. Masturbation and video games are good for you when practiced in a healthy manner.

Masturbation once or twice a week without the aid of hardcore porn so youre not a slave to unceasing sexual desire. Video games to do something stimulating but still relaxing and social after a days productive work. Just like how doing drugs once in a while is fuckijg fine.

try to set up a goal and not just read aimlessly, like challenging yourself to read 50 books on one year

Holy shit. This is enlightenment and needs to be made into a pastebin or something.

>Replace IF I with WHEN I.
everything you said was great, but this really stood out to me

That's horseshit and you know it. You can rationalize it any way you want, just as those who don't understand that religion is a toolbox and not a literal history book rationalize away arguments against their God while they claim both atheists and other religions before and after theirs are wrong, it doesn't change the fact that video games are a waste of time for some and an escape for others, what are you really doing? It's hard to sit through a Lord of the Rings marathon but time can fly by in RPGs, MMOs, even shooters. Even being on here long enough is an issue, we're all sitting down while we're scrolling through posts and writing replies, we weren't made to sit for prolonged periods. People wonder why they're fat when they continue to eat and then walk from seat to seat throughout the day. How many people are lonely? Social media became an escape as well, appealing to the inner narcissism of both men and women, who needs to fix their issues, be it social/mental or physical when you can fake everything online, I went from a greasy nerd to everyone's friend (local, at school, offline) to falling off the face of the earth but being able to due to social media, I stopped seeing my various friend groups and gained a many more, nerds and slightly awkward (socially, not physically) individuals who were where I was earlier, compared to them I seemed alpha, and though I was no one I gained a minor following. Got a girlfriend (way out of my league), but my unearned confidence and ridiculously stroked ego made up for the many other flaws, for awhile. 2 years later I deleted all social media to figure out what went wrong, it was only then that I made actual progress, just as you can polish a turd you can dress to kill and the dark triad personality (didn't know what it was, came naturally) can keep you going but one day that luck runs out and that second chance doesn't come. Out of all the people I knew from 1st grade to Uni, only the non-gamer, non-nerds, started a family. Some of the nerds found partners, gained an okay understanding of fashion, got okay jobs, but most of them stagnated, tripped, and crashed or stagnated, no improvement at all. We all watched porn, we were all jacking off, most of us from the age of 11-13, some still do. The reason it's an issue is because just like video games, just like social media (and I'm talking about nerds, low-social status individuals, not the average person nor the socially graceful and popular) allows for escapism, "I could go to that party..." and then the anxiety hits from having masturbated recently, be it the day before, two days ago, a week ago, etc. and you decide to go but not try to hit on the hot chicks or stay at home and avoid it completely, why fuck when you can just jerk it like a loser, why force yourself to learn the ropes when you can just make a noose by wasting away and giving yourself temporary ED (my libido is crazy, sex at least 2-3 times a week, ex gave head almost daily)...

Understand yourself and the opposite sex: illimitablemen.com/archives/

...by jerking it when your gf is sick or isn't in the mood, then came the days where she didn't just want to please, but actually needed to get fucked, and those moments were hit or miss, either I'd jacked off earlier because it was late and the mood didn't seem to be there, or the head in the morning and anal in the afternoon made my dick too soft to plow her again. I didn't just pull this out of my ass, I don't care whether or not a religion says it's a sin, I'm not here to virtue signal to society-destroying feminists by saying porn is somehow oppressive as if women (feminists in particular) don't want to be the outlet for our animalistic urges. I'm here to act as the sharp object popping the bubble, the inconvenient search result that tells you no when you so desperately want a yes. Masturbation is in every way negative, lowers your chance for prostate cancer? By how much? say its 10%, then its 10% of the % chance you already have due to your genetics, IF that study is true. Search for the optimal number, you'll never find one, just the abstract "healthy" amount. It's because the number is 0. Instead of playing with yourself, adding anxiety, depleting your body, wasting your sexual energy on a napkin and some whore on the internet paid to be the destructive drug for the next generation of bright, healthy porn-free kids, you as well everyone here, including the future generations, should be out killing the social anxiety, learning to socialize, and after that: grab a girl and earn your place in the long line of your ancestors. Video games, drugs, alcohol (getting drunk; social drinking is okay), porn, and masturbation, indulging in femininity as a male, or masculinity as a female, raising the banner of feminism or its equally destructive MGTOW counter-part, along with anything else leading you off the path to fulfilling the single purpose of our lives--other than striving to perfect your mind, body, and spirit--namely to ensure the continuation of your lineage, the survival of your people, and once you've fulfilled life's purpose, leave a mark great enough to inspire your descendants until the end of time.

What are your politics, user? I'm not a /pol/ user but your posts, along with some of Sam Hyde's stuff, intrigue me. I appreciate you writing all of this out and not name calling, like most of the board is now.

if you read even a chapter a day, thats more than most people

its not a race

No. We're not doing this.

it seems like you were a nerd and you want overcome that.
you are trapped in the visión that the real meaning of life is to reproduce. you are totally anxious with that.
if masturbation and videogames is an escape, why have children is not?

> learning to socialize, and after that: grab a girl and earn your place in the long line of your ancestors.
this is the kind of sentence that make you cry of pure spirit and inspiration.

As a sufferer of this debilitating disease, I wish I could nuke people like you.

You want to know how many pages per day the average normie reads? Zero. They're too busy wasting their lives away on social media and other self-indulgent bullshit. Start by reading 5 pages a day. No more, no less. Each day you do this, you be 5 pages ahead of the average Joe McNormie. Eventually, you'll crave more. You'll up it to 10 pages, 15 pages, and before you know it, you'll be swallowing at least 100 pages per day. It's just a matter of falling into that routine.

So you want people to act nothing more than biological robots.

What you said is bs anyway because a lot of the body building community is into video games (esp the elder scrolls), and half of the military is into the nerdiest shit ever. I, myself, have lost 30 pounds in the last year and I still play video games.

I still want to know this.

I'll never understand how people can listen to music while reading or studying. I cannot stop focusing on the music if I'm reading.

Same. I hate even small background "natural" noises. Minor things like strong winds outside my room, or people shuffling about make it hard for me to focus on my studies. Help me Veeky Forums.

If you don't read you literally cannot be a good writer.

That's like being a cook with no taste buds; you have no sense of what is good and what is not.

Dunning Kruger Effect in action.

In order to read books, read about things you are interested in, not what other people tell you to read.

Bad news mate, you're potentially on the autistic spectrum.

Like me.

Do you ever become extremely agitated at small but incessant noises, like an alarm ringing out or scratching pencils in an otherwise silent classroom?

People have often thought there was something "wrong" with me. However, I honestly think it depends on what I'm trying to do at the moment. The only time I really get annoyed with small noises in otherwise quiet places is when I'm reading. Usually if I'm just browsing the web or typing up a document I can deal with the outside noise and irritants. Not sure if that helps you any. I just looked back into this thread after a while.

>he doesn't get comfy in bed and read a hundo pages before sleeping
You fags are the worst

I've barely read anything in my life. Give me the best book in ever written.I would prefer something with mystery.

So do I have autism doctor?

It's one of the tells, I get it pretty strongly, I'm a bit of a household tyrant I guess, always persecuting people about their noise levels.

Other signs like repetetive play and object fixation rather than developing peer attachment are big clues.

Tell me more doc

So what is your favorite book?

Get used to reading. I used to read a lot in HS but when I went to uni I didn't have as much time and spent lots of my time on pc so I played vidya, and when I went back to reading it wasn't as enjoyable as it used to be and I just did't feel like doing it. Just force yourself to read a bit more every day and don't force yourself to read difficult and long books, go for some shorter fantasy book first instead of trying to force yourself to read War and Peace (ofc this is an exaggerated example but you get what I mean.). I recommend some Discworld novels, they are fun to read and they are relatively short.

>undiagnosed ADD

Is this a meme? Literally anyone who spends a decent amount of time on the internet could say this

You need to suffer through a couple of books before you enjoy it. It's a skill gained like playing sport. There's no shortcut. Don't convince yourself you have ADD it'll only lead to more problems. Or don't read.
