Ive been to rural parts of mexico for mission trips a few times, back before it became too dangerous to go. Natives were always very kind, generous, and super friendly. Granted we were in a little town/vilage with a christian majority that we were building a church+school compound for... so I guess its easy to be nice to the gringos building your shit for you.
But it was a good experience compounded by better food (got to eat excellent authentic chicken mole outside in the yard with the chickens that escaped making it into lunch that day).

The shit street and food smell mixed is the best though
