We have them in Australia too. Pretty much all supermarkets use them. You put a coin in them, and when you take the cart back you plug it into another cart and you get your 1$ or 2$ coin back.

It's more to prevent people from leaving their shopping trolleys just laying around in the car park after they put their groceries into the car than anything else, which a lot of people do anyway. The trolleys go rolling around everywhere, sometimes hitting cars, or get in the way of parking, and the staff have to walk around collecting them.

Nah people definitely steal them. There's a ravine near my house and it's full of shopping carts. Some carts have an automatic wheel lock that engages if you take them outside the store, others have a giant metal pole welded to them that prevents them from leaving a certain area.

2) a hyper acceleration of then and still current trends in commercialisation, roll back of social welfare, environmental devastation, resource depletion

3) a possibility for green revolution, resisted by corporate interests

Mars trilogy follows a 200 year story of the colonisation and independence of Mars. It presents anarcho syndicalist and left libertarian ideas and organising not usually present in SF

Science in the Capital deals with near future climate change, the corporate interests opposed to action and scientists trying to get through policy changes, how society is going to be impacted and change
