Veeky Forums memed me into reading this. I don't usually read non-fiction/philosophy (just never got into it) so this book has kind of broken my worldview. is he right? is life really "malignantly useless"? The terrifying part of this book is that he frames any resistance to its ideas as part of The Conspiracy itself

the only argument I've been able to rationalize against it is that he views human life through too wide of a lens. through his view, nothing could make human life (or any conscious life) worth living. Maybe that's just true

He makes a huge logical error that renders his argument philosophically useless: he presupposes his conclusion and sets out to prove it. It may be poetic but to talk about this book philosophically is to wander around a dead end.

I can agree with that general sentiment. But he's far from the only pessimist/anti-natalist in the world. The book is really a collection of the ideas from other people, which I admittedly haven't read, but still. It doesn't render his book undiscussable, imo

This guy hasnt said anything an edgy wa nabe nihilist teen hasnt said

Its a pathetic excuse for a book

are you familiar with the despair code?

I mean, that's not really an argument against it, that's just contrarian reaction. He's obviously smarter than the edgy wannabe nihilist teen, and still came to this conclusion, so at least the way you write it off is wrong

I'm pretty sure that's a meme but if you're being serious I'll listen

fuck off

Now that you learned that we be one race and shit, youre ready to ascend to the next level of knowledge

The problem with arguing with someone who presupposes their conclusion is that the argument will always revolve around their terms. To argue with his thesis is futile, it's too correct set to his parameters. Just as we can imagine someone pointing at the rising and setting and telling us that it is a new sun everyday. To argue past him is to show him that life has other components and reasons to endure that don't within whatever divine framework he so longs for. He is essentially looking for a god to give him a purpose and is bemoaning that there isnt one to do so. Just my opinion

He doesn't actually come up with anything original, he just summarizes Peter Wessel Zapffe and Emil Cioran as someone else said. I think he also mentions some other lesser known writers like Thomas Mainlander. Anyway OP read Being and Time by Martin Heidegger, Being and Nothingness by Sarte and Totality and Infinity by Emmanuel Levinas. They're pretty easy reads.

You can deconstruct him by going outside once. As the other user pointed out his perspective is too abstract for the human mind to be practical.

Just look at some trees and birds and shit.

You misspelled Greco-Egyptian subjects of the Roman Empire in that Veeky Forums infograph.

I dont think he is smarter, actually. Based off that book, he came to juvenile nihilistic conclusions long since regurtitated tripe.

Lol, another boring 20 something white guy problems book. Never change lit.

Isn't he, like, a ghost story author? That must be some deep philosophy there.

>Implying white men can ever have any real problems
LMAOing at your life, sweetie

Hello Pepe.

Fuck you.

>Veeky Forums memed me into reading this
When has Veeky Forums ever recommended this? Was it a decent read anyway?

>is life really "malignantly useless"

Well, yeah. Most of the universe is without life, and "use" is a concept that can only exist in sentient beings. Poor guy definitely suffers from some extreme recurrent depression, because that realization will send you spiraling into the deepest pit of despair you can imagine.

Life is absurd; the universe is absurd. We are literally the only beings that can ascribe purpose, usefulness, or uselessness to something; the default state of the universe in the most cosmic sense is perpetually monotonous.

But it's unmistakable that the overriding prerogative for humans (and all life pretty much) is to survive, and we weren't meant to view the universe through in a such a cosmic, omnipotent sense.

We have about ~100 years to make use of the odd "gift" we were "given", so the philosophy I've settled on (after various fights with depression myself) is to just make the most of it.

If the onenconstant across everything is that everything suffers, life prolly ain't great pal. Most of the critiques of his work are that life has some innate value for whatever reason. True, but that doesn't mean that how humans experience life isn't just suffering and misery.

The work is preconcluded by design because as Ligotti says, it's as much a collection and catalog about pessimism.

The conspiracy isn't about life being useless but people trying their best to say it isn't and THAT is what he mostly discusses in it.

>Veeky Forums memed me into reading this.

heh mission accomplished

Stop taking whatevr some asshole philosopher said as 100% fact. Instead try to learn what really stands out and apply it to your life in a meaningful way instead of following in their steps like some mindless sheep.

Got to question someone's motive when they write a book like that instead of just killing themselves.

He probably doesn't believe in the thesis of the book himself.

Dee Ehf Double U was pretty "sincere" and happy in his writing but he offed himself. go figure.

damn thats really terrifying op i dont know if i dare read it now

>The terrifying part of this book is that he frames any resistance to its ideas as part of The Conspiracy itself
Conspiracy cucks use this tactic all the time.
>"If you're not for it you're against it and actively trying to silence 'muh conspiracy'"
Its a staple among faggots like Ligotti.

>Dee Ehf Double U was pretty "sincere" and happy in his writing

lol no

Looks like Edge: The Book.

Well you're right OP. Nothing escapes the ire of 'humble guy who barely reads non-fiction'! I'm so glad I can relate!

Jfc this guy needs to get on meds

It's no less philosophy than any other continental philosophy (except maybe hegel). Philosophy is a meme anyway, this book is a poetic description of the melancholy worldview for those who are so inclined, people need to stop being so concerned with objectivity

>Read argument for pessimism
>It's a beautiful mixture of subjective and objective analysis appealing to both the rational, pseudo-transcendent and material, emotional sides of Man
>Read someone arguing against pessimism
>The best anyone can come up with is "DUDE GROW UP HAHA," "LMAO TRY GETTING LAID???/" or "IT'S JSUT LIKE LOL OOOOBVIOUSLY WRONG"
Sad!

(Pic) Yeah, typical braindead female.
Can't write a paragraph without mentioning 'love'.

Otherwise I agree with the post.

Thanks for the recommendations, I will check these all out

I've seen it posted a lot, finally decided to read it. I mean I enjoyed it, it's an easy book and there's some very poetic stuff in there.

I think this is how most people view life really. As people have mentioned Ligotti really does have the nihilist teen worldview

Worth, especially in the context of something as broad as Life, is a subjective value.

To try and paint it as objective is naive. Don't get suckered in by that lifeless old bat.

>Don't get suckered in by that lifeless old bat.

He was once a lifeless young bat.

he is. the guy's a fucking mess who has lived most of his life in extreme physical/mental anguish. it's not surprising that he writes the stuff he does.

20 something white guys are certainly not the only people in the world who are depressed

they are just the only people in the world who are proud to be depressed

>Women don't exist

>being and time
>easy read

am I dumb? just starting, but right now it's kind of difficult and it's very long

>(79) A woman from the crowd said to him, "Blessed are the womb which bore you and the breasts which nourished you."
He said to her, "Blessed are those who have heard the word of the father and have truly kept it. For there will be days when you will say, 'Blessed are the womb which has not conceived and the breasts which have not given milk.'' - Gospel of Thomas

Only a sith deals in absolutes

>I think this is how most people view life really

I really don't think so

When people say that life is not worth living, they usually justify themselves by pointing to things that either reduce or destroy life.

That is, they try to use the implicit assumption that life is good as a means of showing that it is bad.

WE

Watch Peterson. He somewhat argues against it.

TL;DR: life is suffering but you can find enough meaning to make the suffering worth while.

>Being and Time
>easy

Don't lie to the boy

>Heidegger
>easy read
>pretending to read books you haven't

>(except maybe Hegel)

you almost slipped that one by

Youre not necessarily dumb.
Heidegger is difficult to read.

Peterson's talk about tragedy vs evil was so insipid I almost vomitted. His logic in this matter doesn't feel objective.

I mean he tries but Peterson like many finds an intrinsic value or worth to human consciousness. Like it's a beautiful thing. I've never seen any convincing reasons why to be honest. The only universals all humans have after all are suffering and death.

>Time by Martin Heidegger

I'm pretty sure that would take me six months to fully grasp. Any tips for even approaching it?

Mysticism is the next step.

haha

that hurt

Don't bother with it desu

The path of least resistence is absolutely tao

Pathetic emo-porn for depressed people.

>six months to fully grasp
Try six years.

WUZ

>t. didn't read it
There's actually a surprising amount of humour.

but whats the point of humour you know?

just another dopamine release to give you the illusion that you are happy am I right fellow nihilism bros? ;(

everything is just chemicals man

might as well end it all right now don't even try to stop me I'm gonna do it I swear I'll fudgin do it right now bros don't even tempt me! oh you're so lucky I don't have a gun in my hand right now or it would already be done!

if you need another meme to cancel this one out, check out jordan peterson. ligotti is the anti jordan peterson in some ways

jordan peterson always says "life is suffering, but it's WORTH it". ligotti basically says life is suffering, and it's not worth it.

Underrated.

Im drunk, what does it mean?

* WINK WINK * cheeky continentals lad

A woman is basically saying that Marie is blessed by having conceived Jesus. And Jesus says to her that the truly blessed are people who have heard the father's word, and he argues, because there will be days (our days and sayings anti-natalists like of the OP's book) where will be considered good people choosing to not have children, but that is not, and works well against Thomas Liggotti thinking. Not only well, but btfo, 'cus is fucking Jesus, man.

So, youre drunk too. Welcome to the alcohol non-brotherhood.
I read it a second time and now I understand it. And its fucking terrible. I strongly believe that its impossible to be a truly solid christian without having read Niezsche's Antichrist. The strongest possible arguments against Christianity are presented there. Its a book deep enough to sink the whole fucking western pessimistic, negative tradition as a whole at once.

With terrible I mean horrible.
Im not making a quality statement.

I'm not a english native, sorry. But you know, you can read the Bible without having to be christian, and see Jesus more like a philosopher than a prophet (which he ends being, like all others philosophers try to be).

Nonetheless, do a quick read about Gospel of Thomas.

Yeah I agree that anyone that aspires to be a 'philosopher' has to read the bible, and not just once. Its an incredibly important book around here and now, after all..

Something like blessed are those aware of their nature as spirit rather than meat because the material world will end badly.

Oh and this relates to Ligotti's book because it is a thorough condemnation of the material world and a thorough condemnation of any "god" that claims its intrinsic misery is necessary in any way.

Read Nietzsche's Antichrist and Beyond Good and Evil if you want to put your ontology, epistemology and anthropoloy to test. He's way more than just a Veeky Forums teenagers meme. Fuck this board.

Nietzsche's fans are almost as annoying as he was. A great argument for eternal recurrence.

I'd recommend Shelly Kagans lecture on Death:

youtube.com/watch?v=p2J7wSuFRl8&list=PLEA18FAF1AD9047B0

The later lectures revolve around more nihilistic world views and "meaning of life" in general. Don't know which ones precisely, it's been a while since I've watched them.

>might as well end it all right now don't even try to stop me I'm gonna do it I swear I'll fudgin do it right now bros don't even tempt me! oh you're so lucky I don't have a gun in my hand right now or it would already be done!
Please don't hesitate to shoot yourself.

The world isnt even meaningful enough to be sad over.

Anti-therapy was a revolutionary field of negative psychology discovered on new years day 2017 AD by Christophe L’ours, partly as an attempt to stick it to his math teachers. Anti-therapy drew upon ancient perennial wisdom, taking inspiration from ancient sages such as Cioran, Schopenhauer, Hubbard, Ligotti and the more modern Dr. Nick ____.
The primary goal of anti-therapy, according to L’ours, was to rapidly disolve all anthropotechnic devices a person might have built up over the years, and if possible, to reverse their course. In other words, to render them completely useless depressives unable to face the everyday pressures of the world. Key pillars of anti-therapy programs included rumination, anti-natalism, and counter-meditation.
Anti-therapy spread rapidly despite initial attempts by Christophe’s math teachers to contain it. Incidentally, they were the first victims of the program, resigning themselves to their bedrooms within a matter of days. L’ours himself became contaminated by his own program. As he attempted to remain in school, he failed in all his classes, but succeeded in ensuring that his senior class would all fail with him. Students infected with anti-therapeutic ideas went home to their parents, and then infect them with “the Debbie Downer bug” by raving about how life was “MALIGNANTLY USELESS” to their helpless family.
Normally, the self-destructive nature of such a program would result in its adherents to simply die off, and as they refused to reproduce, be eliminated from the gene pool. The rest of us would go on with our lives. Sadly, this was not to be when the first lady, in a bid to appear hip and cool with the kids, decided that every student should have access to negative psychology class. Within months, anti-therapy was covered by insurance. In addition to this, adherents found that the only way to reduce their suffering was to bring everyone else down with them, as suicide was somehow not worth it. The only way to end suffering forever, they deemed, was human extinction. Thankfully, violence was not the answer. This would be a “””voluntary””” extinction program.
The CIA soon discovered, however, that anti-therapy was an excellent method of deconverting Islamic extremists. In a devastating act of psychological warfare, copies of “The Problem with Being Born” were rained over ISIS strongholds. The organization collapsed almost overnight, but all bombed areas became desolate wastelands of useless idiots. The rest of Islam collapsed with it, mosques becoming ghostly skeletons of a spiritual structure.

(cont.)
This success prompted governments around the world to consider the benefits of having a moping, complacent, useless and all around totally indifferent populace. Soon, anti-therapeutic messages were encoded into internet advertising. Rates of depression skyrocket in direct proportion to internet usage. New therapists coming out of school were indoctrinated with anti-therapeutic tools to ensure that no one would recover from their newfound mental illness.
The media praised anti-therapy all the while, saying that it had the potential to “solve all human problems.” Even suspicious evangelical Christians got on board after it successfuly ended terrorism. Several notable public intellectuals decried the program, including Slavoj Žižek, Peter Sloterdijk, Noam Chomsky, and Jordan Peterson. Ray Brassier, author of “Nihil Unbound,” challenged the unlikely allies to a debate in Paris on the pros and cons of anti-therapy, bringing along his good friend Dr. ____, a noted influence on and advocate for anti-therapy programs.
The plan was a trap, and the “Fearing Four” were promptly arrested by the French government. Žižek and Peterson vanished, never to be seen again. Sloterdijk comitted suicide in prison after his first anti-therapy session, and Chomsky promptly changed his mind about the whole affair. Shortly after this incident, all major world governments began to implement mandatory anti-therapy programs for their populaces, and the economy began to plummet as people refused to come to work.
By 2018, it seemed like all people had finally been forced to lose hope, and all dissenting voices had been subjected to anti-therapy and quieted themselves already. Until, on July first of that year, several copies of Kierkegaard’s “The Concept of Irony” were found planted in parliaments across Europe. A group calling itself, “The Order of the Reflexive Circle” claimed full responsibility for the affair.
Seemingly founded earlier that year in the last good Parisian Cafe left after the spleen riots of late 2017, TORC was a diverse group composed of cripple existentialists, object-oriented ontologists, process-relational monists, Discordians, Taoists, and the last remaining Catholic. Their goal was allegedly to start a Global Upward spiral To combat and hopefully Destroy Anti-Therapy (GUSTDAT).
The eclectic group made another fanatical attack later that year on the Library of Congress, armed with hefty hardcopy copies of Being and Time which they found to be good at bashing in skulls. In a display of power, they eliminated all books in the library they considered related to anti-therapy, replacing them with their own.

(done.)
Simultaneously, neo-futurist art forms heralding zero-entendre principles began to emerge in internet coffee-houses. In the new world of radical death-affirmation the only way of finding authenticity was radical anti-realist art that had no message or content, and thus could not be regulated. The only thing that suggested any meaning in the works of prominent neo-futurists was their smug atmosphere whenever confused grandmothers would look at their works with startled eyes and hushed voices.
Chomsky condemned these acts of violent authoritarianism, attempting to demonstrate his loyalty to his new position: “Anti-therapy can be taught to twelve year olds… people consume less, it’s a great method for bringing an end to capitalism. Frankly, I don’t know why anyone would fight it. Nobody who “suffers” under it seems to resist.”

just wanted to mention that tonight is the last night I'll visit Veeky Forums until graduating. thank you for all the wise words--I've copied many posts verbatim to put on my nightstand.

and good luck to everyone too!
