That's all for nothing if you get allah akbar'd in a desert.

99% of Veeky Forums isn't fit enough to hold a pistol.

I won't have to worry about sand niggers unless I get deployed and that can't happen until I finish my BS. Either way I don't worry about dying that much, not even depressed or anything.

I went to a very rural university. What I saw from my classmates who were in the national guard was that they kind of grew out of it. They began to resent having to spend time away from the lab getting yelled at by dumb trailer trash. It's a source of income I guess, but selling plasma is probably easier.

Go 68W, the training is pretty cool from what I heard.

I think it'd be neat to work for a national lab with a physics doctorate. Probably not monetarily worth it though

With physics I would suggest Air National Guard. I'm not sure how the National Guard works or the military in general, but I had a smart buddy in USAF who literally became a physicist: academyadmissions.com/the-experience/academics/majors/physics-major/
For army, I'm not sure, there's got to be some CBRN stuff maybe. To be honest I think engineering would get you a lot more opportunities.
Even active duty won't get you allahu akbar'd these days unless you are SF. He's going national guard.

In sorts of ways I like being around dumb trailer trash. I grew up around and partied with rednecks and "cowboys" going to keggers, mudruns and fixing up trucks. I think being in ROTC will land me with more people in my spectrum of intelligence anyway because I'm going to a big science school.

Not even really worried about money, I have high enough test scores to easily get the scholarships I want. I just have always wanted to be in the military and I think doing so will lead me to more interesting jobs with a very slim chance for a path to being one of the people who gets to go to Mars in the coming decades or just working with a large government agency and maybe entering politics.

You realize that you will be activated when Trump starts his war. You will be pulled out of school and as an enlisted NG you will be literally the lowest ranking person (despite whatever they tell you) and you will be taking orders from complete fucking morons.

I enlisted out of highschool because I wanted to party then used the GI bill for my brainlet EE degree.
You think engineers and and fucking arts majors are stupid brainlets? You're going to be taking orders from people TOO STUPID to get an arts degree.

If you really want to join the military finish your degree and go officer. Just remember that officer school requires a 90 in each PT event (for a minimum of 270) to graduate. You will be dropped from officer school and have your contract converted to enlisted if you fail out.

Who told you that you can't get deployed until you get your degree? The only BS you're going to get is the pack of lies from the recruiter.

If we kick off a new war you WILL leave school and be activated.

If you're at the beginning of your college career, keep in mind that you're going to change in a big way in the next 4 years.

>on becoming an officer
3 years into your PhD you're not going to want to drive 3 hours to an army base so that you can go babysit uneducated layabouts who haven't made any steps towards self improvement in the last 4 years.

I think the military has something to offer me, regarding to an insight on life. The university I got accepted to has a base half an hour away.

I'll give a third set of advice, if you haven't started school yet and are joining for the life experience you won't get it from the reserves or NG. Enlist active and pick a good job in communications or military intelligence (but really research the job outside of the army.com description).
I was 25S, satellite communications. It was a blast but 25B and 25N where also good (they where computer admin and networking jobs but 25S was the best).

You will get a massive bonus and have a chill job while still getting to enjoy army training.
If you're active you get to party and enjoy life.

Save as much money as you can, don't blow it on cars, drinking, and girls. Spend a good chunk on drinking and girls but not all of it.
You should easily be able to get out after four years with $50,000 in your bank account to suppliment your GI bill when you go back to school.

Or just stay in school and don't join. I know a lot of people who got screwed over by the reserves and NG while trying to go to school.

AKA is a brainlet in his second year of college with narcissistic dreams of becoming a physicist one day. have fun when you end up shooting protesters the state is oppressing

i have no problem with national guardsmen or people in the military, or police many if not most have good intentions, but fuck the state. 99% of immoral actions are done with beneign intentions or mental gymnastics to delued the actor into believing they arent doing something wrong.
i like to burn american flags, it pisses me off that the state gets to have tanks and heavy weapons to "protect"(we all know it is to keep the proles in line if they ever start asking questions, "follow your orders or face the law") the population, and the population doesn't, nor does the population have democratic control over the national guard.
the founding fathers would be disgusted with Americas police state and the fervent nationalists that invoke their name to give it credibility
as far as what the national guard does to for disaster relief its fine but terribly inefficient, mutual aid works better. but mutual aid requires libertarian socialism to work. People dont even have the means to help each other in liberal societies so they have to rely on their nanny state oppressor to help them in their time of need, but that only works when there is a large population of people that need help that are in the public eye, mostly after a disaster, lord knows the nanny state doesn't want to feed the hungry or house the homeless, which is pretty fucked up and antithetical to human nature.
thanks for reading my blog girls

You really expect someone to read your illogical lolbertarian political rant after you called them a brainlet and a narcissist?

No, he just wanted to feel better about himself by going on a ridiculous and incredibly assuming rant.
There was no intention to educate, advise, or convince anyone.

What he could have done is say something along the lines of "Be careful of the indoctrination, don't give yourself up during the military training and try to use your position to better the country".

Join the air force instead.

If we had a Space Force I would be the first one to sign up.

>That's all for nothing if you get allah akbar'd in a desert.
Won't happen unless you're a kurd as they're the ones doing the actual fighting. Modern militaries just hide at a distance and airstrike the general vicinity if there is a 1% of danger.

Its a very good thing to do. You will be surprised how much stuff there is to learn by even going through basic training (although it may not feel like that at the time). Also it will change your attitude to firearms. They, instead of being dangerous toys, will become a slightly tiresome liability. You will probably be able to shoot far better than any of your mates on a range though. Also you will understand tactic firearms placement. Like for mass murder it makes no sense to be on the 32nd floor for mass murder.... But there is alot to learn. And in the army, there are lots of courses. Try to go on as many as possible. You get full army pay , you get fed you learn alot and training for war, for a young man, is lots of fun! go for it user.

unless they are british. then they have to fend off the taliban with machine guns and mortars cut off hoping the supply helicopter will come with supplies so they they don't get over run through running out of ammo

Go Air Force for Physics. Get your BS. Go to OCS. Do your 5-10 years. In that time, get the Department of defense to pay for your MS and PHD, all the while working on highly classified, cutting edge projects. There are hella opportunities in the Air Force for Physics.

What are you going to do with that insight? How does the national guard fit into your plan for the rest of your life?

t. recruiter

I want to work in big projects and possibly go to Mars when the time comes because it would look good on a SpaceX or NASA application. I might go into the Air Force when my contract ends with the guard so I can be a pilot and that will increase my odds of doing great things thereon after.

Be welcomed into the slave guard. You've officually declared your soul to be sold.

Why do you say that?

>> pursuing a doctorate in physics and I am enlisting in the national guard
I hear cases like these are called permanent brain damage. People spend so much time working on a doctorate that they just don't know what they're doing anymore and just want to do something they can see the results of. Like just firing a machine gun.

Maybe if you need to some tuition money/get some loans repaid

I was once in your position during my undergrad but it sort of fell through, for my situation that was for the better because the next two summers that would have originally been dedicated to Basic training and technical school, I got job and research experience and connections that I otherwise would not have gotten

If you can find an MOS that can teach you a useful skill or that will be relevant to your specialty, I say go for but keep in mind that you will spending a lot of time with the military and lose out a lot of your school time

On a side note, when I brought up the idea of enlisting while in college to other veterans, they seemed kind of confused on why I would do it when I have an established academic career; it seemed like to them, it better to just finish college and go officer

I do like to see immediate results but I love education. I play in competitive college quiz tournaments and just learning and challenging myself overall.

Thats why I'm joining the guard. Their motto of one weekend a month, two weeks a year will stand true unless a war breaks out and even then I can't be deployed under the ROTC unless I sign up to possibly be deployed in it.
