The Stormlight Archive

Over the weekend I have a chance to pick up those 2 released so far books from this series and I'm looking for opinions of it from you guys if someone has read them. Some school mates have recommended it to me as the next big fantasy and since I don't know much about this author, haven't read anything from him except from the last couple of Wheel of Time books which I know he was allowed to complete.

Is this Stormlight series any good to get into the long shot, I know he's planning 10 books for it in total so it will be a while before it finishes, I don't want another ASOIAF case, tho this author looks more respectable then GRRM when it comes to his work.

So let me know what do you think.

Fantasy is garbage.

t-thanks for letting me know lad....

Nobody read this, its ongoing since 2010 damn.

Sanderson knows what he's doing, and the guy's a fucking machine when it comes to writing. Seriously, he relaxes from working on one series by working on another one. You should expect another Stormlight book every two years or so, and between them probably a more reasonably sized installment of one of his other projects, plus a few novellas.

Stormlight three should be coming out in November, and iirc the whole series is gonna be divided into two sets of five books. If you end up liking his writing, there's plenty more of his work to read. People always ask what order to read his stuff in, and the general consensus is publication order. If you're dead set on reading Stormlight first though, I'd still recommend reading Warbreaker between the first two books. All in all, have a good time with it user, Sanderson's a lot of fun.

Finally an on topic reply, that's all I needed, will pick up the 2 Stormlight books, and the Warbreaker you recommended as well, and after them I'll get into more of his works if I end up liking those 2.

Thanks a lot.

Why come to a literature board to discuss genre fiction? Genre fiction isn't literature - it's fiction, but not literature. May I ask, are you a complete pleb, or do you actually read real lit on occasion?

What makes something literature?

They are both written stuff, so what's the difference. Yeah I may be new but read the sticky and it said both fiction and non fiction, no bully pls.

As with most things, especially social institutions (namely, in this case, the novel), there aren't any clear or definite criteria, but genre fiction is generally plot-driven and often associated with entertainment and escapism whereas literary fiction is more theme and prose driven and associated with the promotion of contemplation and self-reflection rather than escapism (one might even view this as the opposite of escapism).

>no bully pls
Kek mate this is Veeky Forums. Our whole object is to bully other people for having inferior taste, and/or impress others with respectable tastes.

Great, between all the incessant jacking off about "muh classics muh existential crisis" it might be possible to talk about shit that's actually enjoyable.

Anyone know any good Jace porn involving invasive mindreading/mindbreak?

Never start a fantasy series that hasn't been finished.

I got 700 pages into Way of Kings before I could not take it any more. The story is overall good but some of the characters are so fucking cringy and the dialogue is embarrassingly bad at times.
I was really looking forward to a series that I can get into for years to come but it felt like a chore to read after a certain point.

This, especially if it has so much books planned like this one.

If it was about other author I'd agree, but Sanderson writes faster than anyone else in the business.

There's a reason they're rated so highly on goodreads. They're the fuckin' tits, broheim! It's fantasy on steroids. They've got it all -- action, adventure, comedy, romance, you name it. Read them or be square.

How is this Sanderson guy so based?

Wow! Sanderson wrote Warbreaker just to give it away for free, for publicity.

I've read the Mistborn books and am looking forward to the third Stormlight book. How do his other books compare?

Great books. Sanderson's prose is overall superior compared to some of his other books. Well paced, except for the intermission parts, lots of action and I liked all the characters. Best fantasy out there right now. World build is a little light imo but he's just getting started with these.

What the hell is going on?

Keep this trash in the designated containment thread.

>I'm pure. I'm a child and stuff. I'm so storming pure I practically belch rainbows.
>Lift summoned her awesomeness
He isn't.

Please tell me that those aren't real

>first quote is fake
>2nd is from a 10 year old girl
Try harder

Both of them are real and just because a character is ten doesn't mean you should use the word awesomeness

He sucks at writing kids. That doesn't make his whole corpus trash like with gee arr arr.
I read sanderson for the details. His plots are incredibly tight, and I'm excited to watch this "metanarrative" develop. And Stormlight is starting to have some okay characterization, so hopefully his characters will get better too.

>a ten year old shouldn't use words that a 10 year old would use.
You pretentious snob

Bit late, but they're all pretty damn good. The only one that's iffy is Elantris, and I'd say that's mostly because it was the first book he published. By the time he started on Mistborn he got his style down, and he only improved from there.

His books outside his fantasy universe are a little hit or miss though. The superhero stuff is alright, but they read like a Hollywood movie would. On the other hand the novellas outside his fantasy universe are great, the most recent one Snapshot, is probably my favorite of the bunch.

As for the main books, Stormlight is great stuff, but I'm really excited for the last book in his second Mistborn series. There's a lot to anticipate if you're a fan of his writing, and in sci fi/fantasy at least, he's the gold standard of the past decade.

>Kaladin contemplated suicide
500 pages later
>Kaladin contemplated suicide

He makes his world have their own words for things but then he goes around and uses shit fron ours. He's trash.

>10 books planned and each over a thousand pages
If you can't finish your story within three books you might as well not bother. I read both stormlight books and you could easily halve the number of pages in each of them and still be fine

Honestly I fucking hated it, only read about 100 pages though. The intro with those knight niggas was interesting. Then the assassination was edgy and retarded, the names of things are straight autistic, but the races it mentioned has potential. It only gets more shit from there, there are these wisps that have different colours depending on what people feel, I can't remember, it's fucking stupid. Last part I really remember was some cunt who he keeps saying is super witty, then a ship captain goats her into saying a joke she was thinking "Oh you said keep my wits about me, but I'd rather keep them in my head xDDD"

>implying other worlds wouldn't use awesomeness
prove that they wouldn't

I honestly don't remember a single part from either of the books. I usually have a decent memory but holy shit were they dull

It's a very comfy series, I like it

OP here, different people different opinions I guess. Thanks y'all can be closed and archived.
