why do so many Europeans come to the US to do their research and teach? I study physics at a fairly prominent US school and a significant number of my professors are European or Iranian. my school is in a fairly shitty area yet Europeans come here - why would they leave comfy, safe Europe to come study at a US school that's in a shithole area?

can't make money in yuropoor fuckistan

I'm a Euro who went to the states for a postdoc, I'll make it short and sweet. The US is a cool place to be, it's good for your career to have been abroad, and English makes it piss-easy to live in the US as well. Granted, the money is better in some Euro countries, but all in all, the US is a pretty good destination for a short gig.

Sometimes you just wanna go somewhere far from home.

i'm talking about full professors though. they seem to get paid well, since I go to a university that's public I can view my professor's salaries and most/all are making $200k+ but they have to live in Los Angeles

Professorships in Euroland (excl. UK) are different. You can only get one if a professor dies and you happen to be next in line. There's usually only a handful of professors per department.

It's about money. In Germany they get 4105.11€ per month which is much less than they would get in the US.

you get paid fuck all in most of Europe. pretty hard to convince people to stay and do a PhD when they can easily earn 3x that amount by going into industry. same goes for lecturing.

US has private universities only rich people can afford, hence professor wages are a lot higher.

>why do so many Europeans come to the US to do their research and teach?
americans complain but the wages are WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY HIGHER in the usa. holy shit we get paid so much more than the rest of the world. im studying engineering in the uk and they shaft engineers so hard. not only can anyone call themselves engineers, they get paid nothing which is why nobody respects them

I'm sure he wasn't explicitly talking about tenure track professors.

A. They do not need to be as qualified.

B. If they join a UCLA style shoplifting team to go overseas, Trump will save their asses if they get caught.

>why would they leave comfy, safe Europe to come study at a US school that's in a shithole area?
Because, contrary to your numale millennial beliefs, socialism does not do away with crime or poverty - and it certainly does not reward intellectually gifted people.

Grass is greener. Im a doctor and plan to move to the US when my first kid is a bit older so as to escape muslims and have free speech. Deep down i know the US is also ruined but it's just hope.

I should qualify that it isnt blind hope. The US has at its core principles of liberty that may resolve the situation and most Americans still believe in things like individual autonomy against the state, free speech, gun ownership. Things that give the US the tools to resolve their situation. The UK and europe has no such thing, people here quite openly celebrate not having freedom of speech.

Because your earn more money.

Relevant question, I've just started my PhD in the UK but I'd like to eventually go to the USA to teach. Is it literally just applying for a job and getting a professor-tier visa or is it more difficult than that?

My mom's a professor, chemical engineering or something like that if i remember correctly, studied hard her whole life, leaves home at 9 am and comes home 7 pm and she makes somewhere around 40 000 per year.

Ah fuck youre making me feel guilty for making more than that in the states with only an AAS

1. America pays a lot more for researchers
2. America has more facilities and private labs
3. Becoming published is much more possible in America simply because there are more research projects here than Europe
4. America doesn't have autists ruining every project by diverting EU money to some meme physics organization

Because the American degree somehow has more value abroad. I'm getting a job at an American company that operates in Europe, so I can leave this Amerimutt shithole.

Most US universities are mouth pieces for politicians and corporations. Hence, money is the answer. Everyone judgmental will have a word but at the end of the day full valet is what matters most.

This, engineers make on average like £40k here where which is maybe $60k whereas $100k + is standard for American engineers. And yes anyone can call themselves an engineer, I'm a basment dweller and I call myself an engineer because I CNC some things to sell and people believe me
