Sardines

how come nobody told me these were so good? i always assumed they would be super fishy and full of bones and shit.

instead it's a rich, non fishy flavor that i enjoy both hot and cold. miles better than canned tuna as a quick no-cook lunch. it's not too often that you find a pantry staple but i did it.

>miles better than canned tuna

i was with you until this

...

But are they pickled?

yes

I like the ones in olive oil the most. Great snack for camping

1. mackerel
2. kippered herring
3. sardines

Oh mi amor

They are full of bones though. That's the only thing that turns me off of them.

the bones are good for you dumbass, plus you cant even notice them

sardines are basically Italian MSG. you can use a little bit of the juice in the can to add flavor to a dish.

Going by mercury levels, that is the correct ranking

They stand out quite a bit to me, especially the spines.

we out here, smoking fat mercury doinks kid

gang

you mean anchovies

after all, you are the B.B. King of your fishy flavoring

I was around backed when these got memed on Veeky Forums and people actually started buying them and realized how they good are. Now I see them discussed everywhere.

The chans are amazing.

Kippered herring is amazing, but the flavor is completely different to sardines. You can't really compare them.

>Chef John

Herring and sardine are common names, not scientific names, and their definitions are quite loose. Neither name corresponds to any particular species. The various fish species that would be called sardine or herring are all part of the same taxonomic family (Clupeidae).

I think they're pretty similar, the main difference being size. Fish labeled as sardines will generally be smaller, and have a softer texture. But if you buy smoked sardines that have been packed in oil, the flavor will be very much like the flavor of kippered herring.

No please, stop posting about sardines. We can't let the normies and hipsters see.

I don't want sardines to triple in price, please stop.

It's Chef John who used the phrase "Italian MSG" to describe anchovies.

I assume that's what was alluding to. Otherwise it would be quite a coincidence.

I ate three cans of albacore tuna in one week, am I going to die?

Yes. We all die, user.

But to return to the topic of the thread, you should eat sardines instead. Chad fish like Tuna accumulate tons of mercury cause they're high on the food chain, but sardines don't. Their mercury levels are negligible, so you can chow down all you want. Unless you eat the smoked ones, which might give you cancer.

This please. It's already bad enough avocado is expensive now thanks to americans going apeshit over it.

Are you in Mexico?

Yes

You'll start setting off metal detectors for sure

If a person has never tried sardines before what is the best way to eat them the first time. Do I need hot sauce or crackers? Certain brands?

I actually hated kippered herring which is odd because I like fish best out of any meat and I pretty much love them all.

Enjoy your mercury poisoning.

I just ate them straight out of the can with a fork my first time. Eating them on crackers is great though, that or some nice toasted baguette slices. They come packed in hot sauce if that's your thing, but I think my favorite so far is the kind packed in mustard sauce.

If you ever go to france get those
A bit expensive but very very good products, the fish rillettes with algae are insane

If they're canned the bones should be soft enough for you to eat straight with no issues.

I eat about a can a day
>how much tuna a week is too much?

KILLER

They are, I just find the texture and taste of the bones to be unpleasant.

Huh, never went out of my way to buy some. Anyone have any good recipes that would use sardines?

>The 'dine threads coming back
Noice

bread
butter
wine

crackers, tabasco

no one told you because you wouldn't have believed them till you tried em for yourself

Sardines, baguette, cocaine, good finishing salt

Sardines with cream cheese and some tapatio on toast is pretty great.

>tfw have mercury amalgam fillings and can feel my mind deteriorating every day

>what is selenium

Does anyone have any old deenz memes saved? Mine were all on my old computer.

The best “common” brands are king Oscar and coles. Honestly my favorite way to eat them is straight out of the can. Get the ones in olive oil. They taste similar to canned tuna so you can pretty much use them the same way you use tuna (tuna salad, tuna melt, etc)
