Like AA but not inherently religious, there might even meetings in your area. It's just good set of coping skills that manage your emotions so you don't need alcohol

My main man Krasz always has like 6 central alcoholics in his books. Don't bother with Under the Volcano, it's well written on a sentence by sentence basis but it is exhaustingly stupid and boring.

The Pedersen Kid is an incredible short story about alcoholism, but it's mostly about how alcoholism affects others
The film is very nice, though it has a happy end, which the book doesn't.
Bad endings just weren't in fashion for films during the 40s.
