ITT: scientists who have a special place in your heart
Pic very related >immigrated to the US from the UK >became a leading climatologist >accepted into astronaut corps in the 90s after he got US citizenship >flew on three ISS construction/resupply missions >went back to climate research after retiring from spaceflight >kept up climate research/advocacy after he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and given months to live >responded to my letter asking for advice on becoming an astronaut in 2014
You still got that letter user? That kicks so much ass desu
William Long
What caused the pancreatic cancer? Space rays?
Ethan Hernandez
I do, I've been meaning to frame it.
"Dear user,
Do what you love first and foremost. If you're lucky (I was) and the opportunities are there, you could well end up being an astronaut. Buf if not, you will still be practicing somethig you love to do anyway.
It's good to do a few things that would make you an attractive candidate. Antarctica is good for a start. Also, a language or two. Some something operational like flying or sailing.
But it's not right reducing your life, you like to meet some imagined profile of an ideal candidate. Such a person does not exist.
Good luck with your endeavours! Maybe I'll see your name one day in the rolls
I'm never gonna measure up to this guy damn. >climate scientist >astronaut >successful immigrant (unironically, it's not that easy)
I'm gonna go live innawoods and hunt and whatnot, that would be fun.
Thomas Cook
>successful immigrant He already had a PhD when he immigrated, which probably makes it easier.
John Foster
True. I may have a PhD one day but I don't think I'm going to space. I'm just not fit enough.
Josiah Clark
You can always get Veeky Forums
I'd love to go to space but my mental health might stop that. Granted, I'm only 23 and my brain is still developing, I'm also still young and it's normal to be somewhat neurotic at this point in my life.
I'm sure as hell gonna give it the old college try. Even if I'm a great scientist, my chances are still basically a lottery but I'll be a better person for giving a sincere effort.
Big deal its an immigrant from a first world country
Ian Russell
Chris Hadfield is from my home town
Andrew Anderson
And Roberta Bondar is alumni from my uni (first female astronaut ?)
Logan Wright
My university is too small to have produced any astronauts, but my metro area has produced a few. Mae Jemison and Jim Lovell come to mind, but there were plenty more since this is the 3rd largest city in Burgerstan.
Jose Taylor
Only freemasons go into "space". Also space does not exist.
