Expain in one sentence why I should start with the Greeks.

Alcibiades did nothing wrong.

Because all subsequent Western literature was influenced heavily by it

all Western thinking, in the strict sense.

Because civilization did.

You actually shouldn't. You should work your way backwards ENDING with the Greeks.

In order for later philosophical works to have a strong impact on you and to provoke self-discovery, it helps to have been primed by the works of Aristotle and Plato. Without their philosophical systems, you won't ask the same questions, and you won't understand the importance of a given philosophical inquiry or issue.

They wuz kangz and shiit

Yes.

It's what the Greeks did.

Sounding like Kermit?

He looks like a tough police detective solving a big case in Little India.

Wrong. We merely forgot the earlier ones, or ignore them like Egypt. Which is interesting to think about - if Arabic conquest didn't occur, we could have a lot richer cultural heritage.

start with the greeks

So you can read about Alcibiades wacky sexcapades.

It teaches you how to think critically about all subsequent philosophy.

It'll save you a lot of trouble later on in your reading.

Plato's Republic, sophist, meno; Aristotle's ethics, politics, metaphysics, can read Epicurus if you want also. Then go to Descartes, Locke, Hume, Kant, Hegel, Leo Strauss, then back to the Greeks, then back to Hegel, then Nietzsche, then Leo Strauss again, then the greeks, then Hegel etc. Etc.

it's pretty mediocre. don't start with hamilton. begin with a history or cambridge companion to classical/archaic greece if you can deal with the format. for mythology, get kerenyi or hard. get the oxford greek lyrics+pindar if you wanna read em over the loeb. don't get waterfield, get literally any other book on presocs like the hackett one (the name escapes me).

Because the modern poets thought it was cool to make endless allusions to retarded Greek stories

I hate the ancient Greeks, and being forced to read them makes me hate them even more. Avoid at all costs!

because you're a pathetic piece of shit who does what other anonymous person on the internet tells them to do
