Uh, this is normal. NASA has always had issues with launches and it's honestly to be expected. Things like this happen, why are you even on this board?

Reminder that Hubble was originally supposed to be launched in 1983 but was delayed until 1990.

TechHater
TechHater

That was mainly due to the Challenger disaster (a legitimate excuse), also JWST has already been delayed 3 years longer than Hubble

Oh yeah? Well the F-35 is costing much, much, much more.

TalkBomber
TalkBomber

It's a stupid comparison, so far over 200 F-35's have been produced and many are currently entering operational service. The F-35 was expensive and delayed but atleast it actually works to some capacity unlike this origami monstrosity. There's no guarantee this budget black hole will even work when deployed due to the complexity of it's folding mirror, that has a habit of tearing. Every day this thing isn't cancelled NASA has to sacrifice money that could be used on science projects that will actually work.

Poker_Star
Poker_Star

They can't fuck this up like they did Hubble. L2 is way too far out to send a repair mission to. If shit doesn't deploy properly or a mirror is slightly off and distorts its instruments the entire 10B mission is fucked. There's literally one shot at getting it right with 1,000+ single point failures.

Pretty much this.
JWST is getting quadruple checked before it gets put into space because once it is up there they have to work with any faults it has, and zero is best.

Just to add to that, in all likelihood the F-35 budget is being used as a cover for all sorts of black budget projects Lockmart does for the government. Picture related.

It is something that a Chilean naval helicopter spotted a few years ago; the Chilean government released the video last year after they couldn't figure out what it was. Search for "Chilean navy ufo" to find the video. The most impressive part is that while the object showed up on the infrared camera, it was invisible to the naked eye & radar.

Anyways, back to space telescopes - hopefully Ol' Musky can get the BFR working on something that resembles being on schedule. Much cheaper launches means instead of launching superlight, absolutely has to work one-off satellites, you can throw up several more cheaply built ones and be fine even if half of them don't work.

because the "object" was thermal exhaust from an airbus a340

Ignoramus

People have suggested that the BFR should be used to recover historical payloads such as Vanguard 1 and Hubble, and safely return them to earth so they can be preserved in museums. Because the BFR has a cargo bay instead of a fairing this is viable, it's essentially a space shuttle on steroids.

if the government actually cared about reasonable uses of budget then the F-35 program should have been canned years ago. it's gone over budget and been stuck in developmental hell for so long it's fucking stupid to complain about wastes of budget for the webb, which has gotten WAY less money overall
