Sales of George Orwell’s novel 1984 have shot up since Trump took power

"In George Orwell’s nightmarish totalitarian novel 1984, politicians speak in ‘newspeak’ – and lies are so common that people have to use ‘doublethink’ to understand them. So we can’t think WHY sales of the novel has rocketed as we go into the Trump era – and the President’s advisor Kellyanne Conway began using the phrase ‘alternative facts’."

"The novel is now the sixth best-selling book on Amazon – as commentators drew attention to the similarities between its chilling future and our terrifying present."

What does Veeky Forums think about this?

good for the faggots that own the rights

I go to books stores all the time (Veeky Forums of course so duh) and they've had that right at the front of them since last year.

1984 used to be fiction now that Drumpf is president it has becomed non fiction

I think it's telling that only the people who haven't yet read the book and just saw the blurb or a synopsis think that it holds anything in common with Trump.

isn't 1984 about sexual repression or something?

Hmmm....
>1984 isn't an instruction manual
Damn.......

it is thought, that orange mofo is fucking net neutrality, and also his "fake news" newspeak

What was doublethink i forgot

Didn't Hillary use the term 'fake news' before Trump?

Yup.

>fucking net neutrality
good
>fake news
was coined by the msm. donald used dishonest press you fag

The term "fake news" was developed by the jewish media to combat alternative media that often exposes how the west's jewish-run media has a specious relationship with the truth, to put it nicely. Trump was just using their own term on them.

...

>fucking net neutrality is good
keep sucking the corporate dick nigger

impeccable argumentation. im a #hillmissile now

It's all irrelevant. Net neutrality was never mentioned in 1984, for reasons that should be self-evident.

They, literally, sellbait books now. Jesus.

first as farts, then as cheetos, etc, etc

Yes. It then backfired because the mass media outlets using it are the same ones that were Iraq war cheerleaders under the pretext of Saddam's WMDs.

If anything, the election of Trump is a refutation of 1984. Orwell took Bernay's concept of propaganda and Cold War realpolitik and extrapolated from there. However, mass media got BTFO'd this election and Trump's foreign policy rejects US/Russia/China realpolitik in favor of a focus on rogue nations like North Korea and ISIS.

It's certainly dysfunctional (I wouldn't go so far as to call any modern presidency dystopian) but it's flaws are entirely different from those cautioned against by Orwell.

ironic embrace of newspeak is triplethink

>if is not explicity mentioned it cant be extrapolated!

Read a book nigger.
fucking sheep wake up the orange chimp sellout to the elite

>Orwell took Bernay's concept of propaganda and Cold War realpolitik and extrapolated from there
Orwells notions were formed pre-cold war, when America was friends with Stalin. I don't see the Bernay's connection either, his whole idea was the potential dangerous primitive impulses in people can be sublimated, by the advertising/marketing industry, into a safe benign consumer culture... that's not a particularly Orwellian nightmare scape.
>mass media got BTFO'd this election and Trump's foreign policy rejects US/Russia/China realpolitik in favor of a focus on rogue nations like North Korea and ISIS.
Trumps whole foreign policy is pretty Kissingerian... detente with Russia isn't some new idea. The only dramatic change so far is the more aggressive pro-Saudi, Israeli line... there hasn't been any policy changes in relations to North Korea or ISIS.

Anybody that thinks a Trump presidency will resemble 1984 is a booger-eating moron

hello /r9k/ :)

dae think 1984 will happen?
Not instruction manual
now non-fiction
fugin Drumpf xD

This is the level to expect. Then they imagine themselves to be above Trump in intelligence.

That was because alternate history hub and other popular Youtube channels shilled, it, this created a fad-like effect among Youtube viewers that are casually into history or politics. In coalition with the presence of zealous anti-Trumpers who pretend to don intelligence, you're gathering an increase in sales.
Rather than these two groups the growth of politicization contributes.

Disregard the first comma after "shilled".

Similar to the handmaidens tale, which is fucking awful by every metric but appeals to SJW's conception of Trump being hitler

I think people don't understand 1984 or the current political climate of the United States, especially whoever wrote that article.

underrated post

1984 is mostly about stalin's urss

>these people think the rise of Trump saw the rise of newspeak

One of the most insidious newspeak terms of the last few decades- "hatespeech" - has been used to legislate thoughtcriminality in many western countries, and yet when a Trump aide uses a perfectly good term (alternative facts - facts that are alternative to ones given by someone else) ONCE, suddenly the world is all Orwellian.

Fuck this gay earth and I hope God changes his mind and decides to flood it again.

How often have I seen this?

Orwell wrote a book about the crushing nature of a society dependency and expectation. Stop making it left right shit.

This is true. They have a hard time connecting the dots for a coherent argument. Things asserted as facts by themselves isn't enough.

>under the belief that Trump is a hard deviation from his predecessor's

stay asleep

>he doesn't realize that Trump is about to ruin everything that took Obama 8 years to build up
stay racist

Reminder to mass shame all who use the newspeak word 'racist.'

Liberals will probably manage to convince people that 1984 is about trump/nationalism/capitalism/alt-right etc etc.
(yes, i know ultra capitalism is just as degenerate as communism)
>inb4 m-muh orwell was socialist, against stalin etc

how can i be as woke as you? do i have to #feelthebern?

Build up what exactly?

Normies are idiots. 1984, along with similar novels like It Can't Happen Here, were written in a completely different era than ours. They were written during a time when most people thought capitalism was finished and that political centralization was both necessary and inevitable. The opposite has happened. The postwar period was marked by the rise of neoliberalism. With the notable exception of Russia, most nation states have weakened considerably and are now largely at the mercy of the business elites, so much so that the distinction between the private and public sector is increasingly meaningless. A novel like White Noise is much more relevant than any midcentury text right now.

Obamacare for example?

national debt for example?

They should read the Great Gatsby if they are so into current time relevant books from the past.

than greentext is true tho isnt it?

they're just taking advantage of the current political climate in the world to sell books, because many people are confused.
the book is a long seller, always sold well, will always sell because it's a good book
>1984 is about trump/nationalism/capitalism/alt-right
1984 is about the post war world. trump is just another guy

when did neoliberalism rose?
>muh Don Gotta Write A Book About Current Events Fast Or Else I'll Lose My Chance Dellilo
he's a hack, White Noise is the trash bin of literature just like the rest of his work. Orwell's isn't

Hate speech predates the writing of 1984, you giant magnificent faggot.

The truly Orwellian aspect of this is that, despite seeing this stuff in government for decades, it's suddenly "post-truth" when done from the Trump administration. I find it truly frightening that they are desperately trying to turn Trump into a "Big Brother", as if before things were all fine and dandy.

It's quite ingenious how instead of one state media there are two state media simultaneously projecting contradictory opinions and each one calling the other 1984. How can a prole rebel when he doesn't know who against?

LOL @ this guy.

>and yet when a Trump aide uses a perfectly good term (alternative facts - facts that are alternative to ones given by someone else

This is the most annoying aspect of all. It was used in a shitty way, but the term "alternative facts", which really meant "an alternate source of information", does have its legitimate uses. It's retarded to paint it as some Orwellian term.

I would argue that a phrase like "Love trumps hate" is actually more deserving of the label, because it implies that anything beyond surrendering in the face of danger is illogical, immoral hatred.

brave new world is more accurate but our media would rather you eead 1984 because its safe and. not that insightful

its never been this consistently brazen. trump contradicts himself mid-sentence and the hoards love it.
sad

>omg we're living in 1984!
>practically the entire media, academic, cultural and intelligentsia are openly and constantly critical of the current administration and have popular support
>all of trump's faults and mistakes are openly discussed

plusgood duckspeak comrade Trump crimethinkers unbellyfeel ingsoc

No what's really orwellian is that the media always tries to bury muslim/minority crime.
