Veeky Forums lyrics

I feel like discussing the literary aspects of music and I think I'll get a more interesting response here as opposed to at /mu/.
Have you ever been really impressed by the lyrics of a song?
Who are some lyricists you admire?
Could lyricists ever be as respected as some of the great poets in the eyes of literature-focused critics? I know people like Bob Dylan get a fair amount of respect but you'd rarely see him on the same list as, say, Percy Bysshe Shelley, and there's a large side of the literary aspects of music that tends to be ignored.
idk, i just think this is interesting topic for discussion

Unironically think this is really poetic.

Most radiohead lyrics, and then a lot of different heavy metal groups.

>GAYDIOHEAD

how did i know this was coming.

just kill yourself.

You aren't funny

The only lyrics I overall enjoy are from death/black metal bands.
Bob Dylan's okay, too.

maudlin of the Well has some good stuff imo, and the first few kayo dot albums

All of the lyrics from the album Third by Big Star

Also unironically Bright Eyes

Song lyrics are a species unto themselves, the lyrics themselves cannot afford to be too complex without the risk of defeating the purpose of the music.
What Shelley Keats Wordsworth Coleridge et al do in their poetry is convey both feeling AND thought through imageries and turns of phrase whereas a song lyricists supplies a kind of 'logic' for the feeling the music itself will carry. For instance, the song I heard when in the grocery store not ten minutes ago was Aimee Mann's The Moth--
>the moth don't care if the flame is real
>'cause moth and flame got a sweetheart deal
>and nothing fuels a good flirtation
>like anger and need and desperation
>no the moth don't care if the flame is real...
The music is both ominous and though fatefully measured, headlong. It's a good song.

this album contains some of the greatest lyrics ever written. The main lyricists is actually who features in OPs pic. It's dark, bleak yet somehow poetic. He'd also probably be browsing /mu/ and Veeky Forums if he is still alive (he disappeared, possibly killed himself, although there's a chance he left the country).. He was apparently addicted to books, like he locked himself in his room and just read books and write all day on all sorts of different subjects. I'd definitely reccomend some people on this board to check this album out.

his name is Richey Edwards, i forgot to mention

Which books?

>clearly doesn't know what sound Я makes
>fat woman with rubbish art as the cover
>half of the songs are just shitty identity politics opinions
This is why I hate Americans

Check out Milo for some somewhat literary nigger music.

As cars go by I cast my mind's eye
Over backpacks on roof racks
Beyond the horizon
Where dream makers
Working in white plastic processors
Invite the unwary
To reach for the pie in the sky
Go fishing my boy!

We set out in the spring
With a trunk full of books about everything
About solar devices
And how nice natural childbirth is
We cut down some trees
And we trailed our ideals
Through the forest glade
We dammed up the stream
And the kids cooled their heels
In the fishing pool we'd made
We held hands and we exchanged bands
And we practically lived off the land
You adopted a fox cub
Whose mother was somebody's coat
You fed him by hand
And then snuggled him down
In the grandfather bed while I wrote
And we grew our own maize
And I only occasionally went into town
To stock up on antibiotics
And shells for the shotgun that I kept around
I told the kids stories while you worked your loom
And the sun went down sooner each day

The leaves all fell down
Our crops all turned brown
It was over
As the first snowflakes fell
I realized all was not well in the camp
The kids caught bronchitis
The space heater ran out of diesel
One weekend a friend from the East
Rot his soul
Stole your heart
I said, "Fuck it then
Take the kids back to town
Maybe I'll see you around"

I said, "Go to him!"
She said, Okay"

And so, leaving all our hopes and dreams
To the wind and the rain
Taking only our stash
Left our litter and trash
And set out on the road again
On the road again

Bye bye, Daddy
You can bring Pearl she's a darn nice girl
But don't bring Liza

Check out the band The Chameleons
Great lyrics I'm sure people on here will appreciate. Massively underrated.
They are truly magical.

Wow he actually had good taste

>making literature references=literature

He sound like he reads the first paragraph of something on Wikipedia and then name drops it for a rhyme. Milo is nowhere near literary rap

Fairly true and I expected to get a response like this. Any recs for more literary rap?

And also, besides the Veeky Forums references he is a great lyricist with some very well written songs.
