It's also about nutrient levels, which have varying levels of importance from person to person.
However, I still think th at dish is stupid. Why not just make a nice pasta salad with avocados, tomatoes, arugula, olives, cucumber, radish, parsley, and basil, with a vinaigrette? That makes more sense to me.

It's from South Africa. Beans salads aren't that uncommon, I actually like them. But using baked beans to make them seems like something you'd do when that's all you have available, the sugary sauce isn't good for a 'salad' type of dish.
