Try memrise for vocabulary if you can't stand robo-voices

I'm trying. I'm just a stupid American, though.

>Non sa leggere en Italiano.

as far as robo-voices go, I think duolingo is pretty good

French is dope. I took it in high school so my understanding is pretty poorly but my pronunciation is alright.

What's fun is reading Rimbaud's poetry in the original French. You really get a sense of the internal music when you don't read a translation.

français*. Maybe learn when to capitalize letters in French?

>tfw t'es né en Maroc

le francais, c'est simple. Surement, tu comprends cette phrase... Si non, tu es stupide.

Mais, je peux?

If I wanted to learn a dead language, it would be Latin. French is disgusting.

Je suis toujours surpris par la quantité de langues parlées ici.

Aussi, j'ai une question pour les vrais français de Veeky Forums: Quant à Zola, est-ce que je peux lire Germinal seulement, or devrais-je lire la série entière des Rougons ?

Zola, il vaut la peine d'être lu ou pas?

Il me semble être un écrivain profondément inintéressant.

do anglos feel they have no need to learn another language? everyone but them is at least bilingual

to su diftonzi
v d t

As an anglo, the answer is mostly yes, they feel no need. Because English is so widespread (and becoming moreso every day), another language is useless for most anglos (at least in the US). Thus, if anyone wants to learn another language, it's either because of special business, travel plans, or just a hobby. It's unfortunate, and I still think learning other languages are worthwhile, but the majority of English-speakers are simply not interested and never will be.

J'a un petit coq, Tous, francaise leche mon petit coq.

>to su diftonzi
lol... Prvi je polu-vokal, druga dva suglasnici. Kako mogu biti diftonzi?

This.

I try to learn languages as a hobby because I think they are fun and interesting. But I have never actually had a chance to use them.

J'ai habité en France et j'ai étudié cette langue pour trois ans au lycée. Mais j'oublais tous les choses. Il fait du mal.

Zola m'a toujours laissé perplexe, mais il paraît qu'il a beaucoup de force...

Essaie un volume des Rougon-Macquart et tu verras.

>ces petits étudiants qui n'ont aucune maîtrise de la grammaire
Si on m'avait dit que la plèbe étrangère serait si incompétente mes yeux seraient encore intacts

While we're at it, anyone could recommend some worth-reading german literature? preferably modern. I've got access to a private library near home but it focus solely on the german speaking world.

I have read already the classics: Kafka, Mann, Grass, Goethe, Schiller and Hesse.

>si elle serait

Belle grammaire, dis donc !

Not German, but at least Jünger and Musil for the 20th century.

Tu peux lire Germinal seul

>Malay (including Indonesian)
>Hindustani (Urdu + Hindi)

Good memes. These are not the same languages (not even the same alphabet in Hindi and Urdu), although there are strong similarities. You might as well say Spanish and Italian are the same language, and group them under the "South European" moniker.

And French numbers are highly debatable. Only 76 million L1 speakers, with 67 million Frenchmen, 8 million Québecois, 3.5 million Wallons, 2 millions Romand Swiss, and all the expats from these countries (2.5 million just for the French)? The real number is easily above 80. And then, only 153 million L2 speakers, when it's the lingua franca in half of Africa? It's way, way more.

>sunt tu

For what it's worth, most non-native speakers would rather practice English with me than let me flail around with whatever they speak. And I feel like they often need to speak English for economic reasons and that's more important than my need to feel like I tried.

>different alphabets

please explain to me the meaning of the last two sentences

>Americans speaking French
>doesn't elide his syllables, completely butchers the guttural R, the œ, and the nasalized vowels

The vocabulary isn't the same either. There is overlap, and there are very significant differences, even for the most basic words.

*Je ne parle pas Français, je voudrais l'apprendre

>well, (speakers) can really only read anime and manga
>it doesn't matter if (you) know it
Japanese is a pro-drop language, and I fucked up that first sentence on a level beyond language.

Besten Dank, Jungs.

What makes you claim that there's no good german literature? I'm not an expert on the subject but seems likely impossible for a country as influential as Deutschland to not have a most interesting literary culture as France or the UK. On the other hand I'm most familiar with european cinema and when it comes down to Germany the film culture is virtually non-existent.

I sound like a douche, please keep in mind english is not my mother tongue.

>je troixante ans
It's been a while but shouldn't this be "J'ai troixante ans"?

Germanfags, please recommend me some baby-tier german books so I can get started on learning some shit. Tried reading Im Westen nicht Neues but it's kinda too hard.

Die Verwandlung it's always a good start and you had probably read it by now, I guess that will make it easier for you.

>j'ai trente ans
the whole post is all sorts of wrong dude

In my experience, books with lots of dialogue. Try books you've already read, if any, or translations of them in German.

nobody likes Chinese?

how much can you learn from this site?
