facebook for pseuds

But it's nothing like your usual social media.

I love it, it's like imdb for your books

Whenever I don't have anything I want to read but I'm looking for something to read I just look at my to-read-list and pick something. Also I write a short review (hidden so nobody else reads it unless they actively seek it) as notes for me to remember the book better. Plus you get an overview of what you've read and how you liked it

You know you don't have to make 'friends', right? I use it as an overview of the books I've read, and the recommendations have largely increased the amount of books I'm reading.
And I can shill my favorite books by voting for them on lists.

makes me feel like i progress in something

It's good for recommendations, and it feels satisfying to add books to my "read" list.

I was thinking of making an account but a lot of people told me the rec feature is bad. is this not true?

so does world of warcraft

Prefer LibraryThing

It's like Pandora, where they're obviously hocking books for by publishing companies. I just finished the complete works of Kafka and it said, "you might enjoy Here I Am by Jonathan Safron Foer" or whatever his name is.

I don't read enough books right now to get much value out of it, but I like it. It's nice to have a giant backlog of books sorted by genre or topic.

What does LibraryThing have that Goodreads doesn't?

Better control of your catalog, better recommendations, more likely to come across somebody with interesting libraries. The stats it spits out about your library are also interesting. (And I think the site is less of an eyesore than Goodreads)

It is not as focused on reviews and social media as Goodreads, however.

Yes lads, goodreads squad

>less than 100 books read

So this is the power of Veeky Forums...

goodreads.com/group/show/67886-lit

wew lads

and its GAY

no u

>tfw I only have 16 books read

I don't know if I'd have over 100. Can I add Manga? Then it'll shoot towards the sky.

I don't have it as I'm afraid people might stalk and judge me for only reading fantasy and sci-fi shit.

These. The lack of emphasis on social media is why LibraryThing is good, IMO. It's not suited for making new friends, exactly, but it's still pretty good if you already know people outside LibraryThing (a la Veeky Forums, IRL, etc.).

Just be friends with other /sffg/ nerds.

Reading is not to impress others. Also remember the wise words of Chairman Mao: "To read too many books is harmful."

too many wine moms

I used to use it casually as a list app but with all the social stuff locked down but I try to no longer keep track of anything.

It's a decent place to find quotes though, usually one of the first results to come up in a search.

I use it to see what people who added me are reading. I do prefer LibraryThing though.

Hi guys I'm really annoying like everyone hates me

Thank you for letting us know.

i hand write my lists but use it as resource and entertainment when Veeky Forums is slow, i've taken to entertaining others by breaking free of a self imposed shell and casting my mind to the wind and installing thoughts into others. ha. i might even become a drunk at this rate, wouldn't be bad.

>Better control of your catalog, better recommendations, more likely to come across somebody with interesting libraries. The stats it spits out about your library are also interesting. (And I think the site is less of an eyesore than Goodreads)

It also has a subscription fee

I've made an account and added all the trash I've read so far that I could remember. (it's not much)
goodreads.com/review/list/70279522-videogamesareliterature?utf8=✓&utf8=✓&shelf=read&title=videogamesareliterature&sort=date_pub&order=d&per_page=100

Not sure where to go now.

There's a lifetime fee of $25. Who doesn't have 25 bucks?

y'know, amazon actually owns goodreads. now, i wonder why a company that has a vested interest in the sale of literature would own a site devoted to the recommendation and review of literature. hmmmmmmm.

It's not about "who doesn't have X amount of money"
It's that "is y worth x amount of money" and in terms of "website use" it's mostly no. You can say the same for a Burger that costs 25 Dollars. "Who doesn't have 25 bucks?" Nah, is a Burger worth 25 bucks for you?

For what its worth, I have discovered a lot of cool shit thanks to prowling around on goodreads. But yeah, I get why someone would think its narcissistic and gay. Especially edgelords on Veeky Forums.

So? It still produces a site with good recommendation system, good way to follow what your friends are reading. If Amazon uses it to recommend books in their web-shop, who cares? Wouldn't you want accurate recommendations?

Nah I just maintain a txt file on my computer since I don't like socialising.

i've been using it for years. i've had some Veeky Forums folk added for like 2-3 of those years, and it's been charming seeing what they're reading and how their taste evolves. i enjoy keeping track of my reading statistics, and the yearly tracker is good motivation.

You LITERALLY don't have to socialize with anyone on Goodreads if you don't want to.

But I guess the only benefit of using Goodreads instead of a text file is the recommendations system.

[insert some retarded conspiracy bullshit about the Jews here]

I use it as an archive incase my books get destroyed and to chat to pleasant well read anons

>less of an eyesore than Goodreads
Are you kidding, Librarything is ugly as shit

i like it, i always set challenges for me. Keeps me motivated. This year i'm 4 books ahead. Feels good.

plebeian, desu

i use it to keep track of my stuff, not really familiar with any of the community aspects

I know I'm trying to better myself.

Goodreads looks so cluttered to me

Why does "gay" make me laugh so much?

I can see the advantages of using it, as far as discovering new books through recommendations, keeping track of your "to read" list, etc. but I don't have an account.

What I don't like is the mostly awful people who review and vote on lists, and the idea of giving Amazon even more of a monopoly on ebook sales, not to mention the privacy issues.

1 don't add anyone with plebian opinions and you will not see them
2
>buying ebooks

3 use a throw away email and don't link any social media bullshit

I get what you're saying, but...
>don't add any plebs
Are you saying that if I click on a particular book, I won't see any reviews unless I am 'friends' with the reviewer? What good is that?
>buying ebooks
Yes, some people like to support authors. Some prefer retail formatting, and some want books that aren't available on IRC, torrents, or lib sites.
>use a throw away and don't link
They'll still ID you via IP and cookies, and it seems a little overboard to have to use a VPN just to visit Goodreads. I'd rather just not use it.

I use to track books I've read and want to read, you can get a pretty good organization with different shelves. this year will be the first time I will be able to securely tell how many books I've read because of goodreads. I have some """friends""" I made in goodreads threads but I pretty much only log in to update 'currently reading'. rarely someone comments on my review and I reply

>Are you saying that if I click on a particular book, I won't see any reviews unless I am 'friends' with the reviewer? What good is that?
you will see reviews of not-friends. if you don't want to read stupid comments though, you might as well leave interwebs

>They'll still ID you via IP and cookies, and it seems a little overboard to have to use a VPN just to visit Goodreads. I'd rather just not use it.
again, if you are worried about cia niggers (score one for the good guys) ID'ing you, just leave interwebs, only way to stay clean.

If the epub I just pirated doesn't have a cover this is the place I use in calibre to find one.
