Which musical pieces would you say compare to the works of Shakespeare or Tolstoy?

Not him but I've recently gotten very deep into classical music. Wagner, and the ring cycle especially, really took me to another level. John Field's nocturnes is also one I've been binging on lately, to name but a couple.

I agree with you, though. Music is an altogether different experience in that it is more universal and direct. Prose can rarely be as vividly appealing to our primordial emotions the was music can. After all, the ultimate art contest was a musical one between Pan and Apollo.

The works of Shakespeare and Tolstoy convey many moods, where musical pieces usually only contain one or two. The mediums cannot really be compared this way.

I would say Grieg would accompany Shakespeare very well, and has.

Songs, i.e. voice music, is much stronger because it's such an old art form, our ancestors have been singing since the dawn of time. Prose is an extremely recent art form that concerns only a minority of ethnic groups that have a writing system, most wouldn't even have one if it wasn't for colonisation by writing people. Singing goes deep back, poetry is somewhere in between, prose is pretentious homo technologicus gibberish.

There isn't some single aesthetic state that various arts allow you to experience through different means. The power of songs is different from the power of literature. People don't necessarily read to feel moved, etc.
