How about we ACTYALLY run a publishing company? Anyone have the numbers on what this would cost? I imagine it's comparable to running a record label, which is pretty easy now a days (though getting noticed in our overaaturated world is difficult) but hell there's a lot of really interesting ideas floating around the chans.

I actually started one a few years ago then I left it because I got a better job.

It's around 4 to 8k to print on demand 300 copies. That's the most cost effective solution if you are going to sell from your garage without a huge distribution network and advertisement.

OP here. I genuinely started the thread to see if rhere was any interest. It shouldn't be hard to select a few books, crowdfund the printing of a nice, small edition, and move it around.

3. A contract with a physical book printing company.

This isn't really any different from the music label my friend and I run. We have jobs to pony up the cash to press vinyl. The editor is lile the masterer for the music.
Any book printer will print whatever shit you send him, he won't give a fuck if yor with the tribe or not, only that you have the cash for whatever is their limited amount for a copying run.

So to recap, maybe my money from engineering can go to running a publishing company on the side. I really don't see how hard this is.

Just like with record sales there is no money in it unless you hit a best seller, which really comes down to exposure like getting io9 and places like that with audiences who read to make reviews of it. That probably requires paying them. I know in electronic music to get Resident Advisor to review your music you need to pay. To have it reviewed favoribly you have to pay a few grand.

Friendly advice: if you want to start a successful publishing house (or at least garner some name recognition)
you have to name your group "white man press" and state explicitly that you will only take submissions from white men. This should attract a lot of media attention. State your goals clearly: you are tired of the derisive and toxic attitude of the feminists that dominate the publishing industry, and you want a place where white men can be assured that their works won't be dismissed or discriminated against because of their race or gender. One actually off of Veeky Forums believe it or not who's become a good friend. The rest are from party/gig connections bc now a days mostly musicians go out to see other musicians and the rest of the bystanders are just there to get fucked up regardless of if a band was there or not. That's how most music connections work nowadays.
Of course, no one buys music any more, and no one reads, but if you had a niche like the poster above suggested you could actually get attention. Any press is good press and I think that's not a bad idea. When I'm done with uni I might start a publishing house. I'm really into this idea.

How are you going to convince authors to sign exclusive deals with you and how are you going to create physical books and market them to a unestablished audience?

As for the pic, the first part makes perfect sense but given the prevalences of male writers, it seems bit over the top.

It's way easier with music due the lower entry "effort" for customers. Reading is a much heavier investment of time and you'd want to be sure it's worth it, say the books is from an already famous writer or a newspaper talked about it.

Editors is another thing that's much harder, there isn't really a way to be wrong with music, while the language got clear rules and only few would be able to get away breaking them, and this is all before the much bigger issue of content. Simple shit like cover design + editor + advertising would be probably already too much.
