This just makes me sad, I know it's mostly a lack of self-control and education about how to stay healthy but I still hope we can figure out a better way to deal with obesity

I spent a Summer working with bariatric patients. Essentially people so fat that they need medical assistance to stay alive. CPAP and such.
It's a mental illness to get that big and it requires treatment of the mind as well as the body. Anyone who tries teaching people that this is beautiful and healthy should be fucking shot.
One guy, former chef actually, told me he'd sometimes wake up in the night and feel peckish. He'd fry an entire duck and eat that, then go back to bed.
I assume he cut it up, maybe deep fried it, to save time but I was honestly too taken aback to think to ask.

I don't hate these morbidly obese people but I despise their enablers with a rare passion.

I think the only people who say it's beautiful are people who are already like that and don't have the willpower to change. Or it could be something genetic. Not in the sense that your genes are going to make you morbidly obese on a 1500 calorie diet like some people claim, but that it makes you more likely to overeat in the first place and make it harder to turn down food. You can see something similar with animals sometimes, where you give two animals an unlimited amount of food and one of them will pretty much regulate their intake and stay at a healthy weight but the other will just keep eating and eating until they get fat and sick.

I lived in South Korea for nearly 2 years, and while I found a lot of food I liked, Kimchi was a disgusting nightmare that lurked around every corner. I will never understand how an entire country can become so obsessed with rotted cabbage with spice.

If you're asking about kimchi, it's actually pretty delicious. The flavor of the actual cabbage pops so much because of the fermentation, you taste a good amount of vegetable underneath the spices and garlic. Just imagine the taste of cabbage multiplied by the taste of cabbage (exponential cabbage) swimming in that Asian chili-garlic stuff that comes in a jar.
