It's not easily described. Personally I hate it, but I also don't mind drinking gin straight, so there's no guarantee you and I have similar tastes.

I was kinda fucked up and put a shot of Bailey's in a can of Yoohoo, would not recommend, but I think one day I'll revisit it and try and make something alcoholic and palatable out of yoohoo.

It's fortified wine that makes it higher proof but also adds some flavors. There are different recipes. Just buy it. It's inexpensive. The only issue with vermouth, is like wine, it has a short shelf life after opening. It's great for cooking, though. Julia Child used it often, as was the era to have a lot of leftover vermouth handy from cocktail parties. Use it anywhere you'd use wine in a recipe. Fortified wines (and gin if we're being honest) have a lot of botanicals, secret ingredients, and high hangover potential. They're a bit out of favor.
