So I have this co worker who's heavily into Northern and Western European history. He made a claim that, according to research, the Picts were actually a Germanic culture and related or even interchangeable with Saxons. However, he has a dubious background as a neo-nazi and he couldn't (or wouldn't) name his sources so I became suspicious. On the other hand, I am still curious, because it could very well be that I had missed out on some groundbreaking new discovery since I don't really keep up with the latest history newsletter.
Can anybody on this board here deliver sources or confirm this claim? Or was he just full of shit because of Völkische Propaganda?

We don't know much about them, but there's literally nothing indicating Picts were Germanic and everything indicating they were Celtic. The relatively small Germanic contributions to their modern descendants' gene pools can be attributed to Norse and Saxons settling nearby.

the picts held no formal contact with any Germanic folk, and we don't know what their language was because they were the most savage of the folk native to Great Britain. It is most likely that they were some Brythonic speaking celtic folk, but the notion that they were germanic makes little sense.
again, it was once the common belief that they weren't even Indo-European, so we cant be certain since we know little about them.

To say they were interchangeable with saxons is pretty absurd, their language was documented as being very similar to the Britons, and we have DNA studies that show the Islanders NON-GERMANIC genetic history is mostly still intact despite the language and cultural er... enrichment

They were a Celtic people related to the other Celtic Britons. Germany influence only came into what is now Scotland after the Saxons and Norse arrived. The view that the picts were germanic is revionist history favoured by lowland Scots and the English. Most Scots even the lowlanders are a majority Pictish and Gaelic mix with some Norse sprinkled around especially way up north and in orkney and Shetland.
