I agree completely. The British Empire is judged entirely differently to every other empire that ever existed. It's repressive and stupid actions were in no way more severe than any other empire that managed to govern a similar amount of people. I think it is totally fair to argue the case that Britain was more moral than anyone else; which other country would have strived to end slavery in the way Britain did. This move was prompted by the public collectively deciding it was immoral and the government responding. It cost 40% of the national budget merely to compensate ex slave owners, and much more in the lost potential revenue of continuing to use slave labour. Has any other empire ever done anything more altruistic?

actually, every other Empire before the age of European colonization actually had to win the hearts and minds of the people they conquered.
European Empires were not only distant from the people they were conquering (meaning they had to worry less about their opinions), the wide use of guns against people who did not have guns meant it was cheaper and more efficient to use fear as a means of control.
The Europeans were an anomaly in regards to how shitty they actually were. Other Empires might initially be really shitty, slaughtering people for a couple years or so. only the Europeans did it for decades (at least).
I like to say it's because of European culture to troll Europeans, but it's really because of human nature. The first Empires to become global were destined to be as shitty as a the Europeans. Even if it was African or Native American or Asian or whatever.
We can always at least be thankful that it was European Empires, and not, say, people like the Aztecs. They would've been much worse.

European Empires leaned way more along the "bad" side of things. There were countless things that didn't need to do, but were so worried about saving every penny and short term gains, they did really shitty things.
It's why European Empires had shorter live spans than other Empires in history.
