Cathartic as hell, full of "simulated action" that has real life, dangerous consequences, quest to save the world, hero gets the girl, etc. It's not the peak of written literature, but if you can't see it for what it is, a fast fun read that is the spitting image of the Hero's Journey, that's your loss man.

...

Twilight for men.

Ad hominem nigga, do you even think? Try a real response.

>muh heroes journey

WHEN WILL IT END

Never, the hero's journey describes what happens to everyone, and is a continual process that repeats itself over and over, in many iterations, varieties, and scopes.

Yes but American Psycho "did it on purpose".
Someone should edit American Psycho changing all the references to his lifestyle to a geek's, and the pop culture references to the 80s and 90s geek culture references straight from RP1.

The book is written with trash-tier prose throughout and drops continuity within the course of a single page. If you don't think this is a problem because the concept is kinda interesting and the plot goes somewhere then you belong on /r/books.

>drops continuity within the course of a single page
W-what does this mean?

What culture is American Psycho supposed to be the Ready Player One of?

American's.

Minor events in RP1 have no effect on each other. Cline's characters swing through enormous emotional swings over the tiniest things in the span of minutes.

80's Corporate culture

I’m half way done and loving it!

Urban professionals and some of the upper class. It's set in the 80s but it still resonates with guys I know who've worked on Wall Street or in tech and consulting.

>Hero's Journey
this and any word originating from a J.K. Rowling novel should be banned from the board entierly

This isn't actually your critique, is it?

How is the fundamental structure of all story a phrase you want banned? You don't happen to be a contrarian do you?

nothing wrong with that

It's not everything that's wrong with this terrible book, but it's extremely jarring, and the only reason it wouldn't be is if you don't read well enough to notice.

American Psycho served as a critic of its culture while RPO fetishizes it.

>contrarian
this word stands for more than just "people who disagree with me"

Is RP1 a critique of that culture, though? I was under the impression that American Psycho was critical of the vapidity of the corporate lifestyle while RP1 just basks in its nerd references.

I hate RP1 and agree with what you say but American Psycho was a shock value book from page one and we all know it. Easton’s books are all shock value. They may also be critiques of their era but he is deliberately recurring to extremely taboo topics just to get attention.
Difference is, remove all the violent scenes in American Psycho and you still have a brilliant dissection of the Yupie era with all it’s vapidness and fakeness. Remove all the 80’s memberberries from RP1 and all you have is another YA novel.

Ready Player One is a critique of the jocks that made fun of Earnest Cline in highschool

No because American Psycho is a critique of vapid 80s consumerist culture whereas Ready Player One is a loving tribute to vapid "geek" culture.

He gets it....

>memberberries
You're as bad as cline.

How so

not the guy youre replying to but south park panders to brainlets

Okay but what does it matter if he uses a term from it
That's like complaining about someone using the word "robot" because the play it comes from is shit.

it implies he is a regular viewer of south park and puts enough intellectual stock into south park's content to incorporate it in his critique of other things

Where can I find an ebook of this dumpster fire?

He just borrowed a term from it chill.

>le ebin nerd references rawr xD

It's just a word to help him get a point across it's not that important. It's not really supposed to be a nerd reference especially because it's criticising that sort of reference that RP1 does.

my diary desu

Ah but you see, the beauty of RP1 is the earnestness in which it glorifies 80s culture and geek culture as a whole. If it didn't if it was just a cheap attempt to cash in on the 80s nostalgia that has gripped our culture since 9/11 then it would ring hollow, but Ernest Cline is earnest in his attempt to glorify his childhood Thus, ironically enough, he shows the vapid, empty, consumerist slop that is nerd culture. This genuine loving attempt is a better critique of a culture than American Psycho ever could be.

is that a ranger?

Reminder about Cline's poetry (yes, it's real)
I've noticed that there don't seem to be any porno movies

that are made for guys like me.

All the porn I've come across

was targeted at beer-swilling sports bar dwelling alpha-males

Men who like their women stupid and submissive

Men who can only get it up for monosyllabic cock-hungry nymphos

with gargantuan breasts and a three-word vocabulary

Adult films are populated with these collagen-injected

liposuctioned women

Many of whom have resorted to surgery and self-mutilation

in an attempt to look the way they have been told to look.

These aren't real women. They're objects.

And these movies aren't erotic. They're pathetic.

These vacuum-headed fuck bunnies don't turn me on.

They disgust me.

And it's not that I'm against pornography.

I mean, I'm a guy. And guys need porn.

Fact.

"Like a preacher needs pain, like a needle needs a vein,"

Guys need porn.

But I don't wanna watch this misogynist he-man woman-hater porn.

I want porno movies that are made with guys like me in mind:

Guys who know that the sexiest thing in the world

is a woman who is smarter than you are.

You can have the whole cheerleading squad,

I want the girl in the tweed skirt and the horn-rimmed glasses:

Betty Finnebowski, the valedictorian.

Oh yes.

First I want to copy her Trig homework,

and then I want to make mad, passionate love to her

for hours and hours

until she reluctantly asks if we can stop

because she doesn't want to miss Battlestar Galactica.

Summa cum laude, baby!

That is what I call erotic.

But do you ever see that kind of a woman in a contemporary adult film?

No.

Which is why I'm going to start writing and directing Geek Porno.

I shall be the quintessential Nerd Porn Auteur.

And the women in my porno movies will be the kind

that drive nerds like me mad with desire.

I'm talking about the girls that used to fuck up the grading curve.

The girls in the Latin Club and the National Honor Society.

Chicks with weird clothes, braces, four eyes, and 4.0 GPAs.

Brainy articulate bookworms, with MENSA cards in their purses

and chips on their shoulders.

My porn starlets will come in all shapes and sizes.

My porn starlets will be too busy working on their PhD to go to the gym.

In my kind of porno movies the girls wouldn't even have to get naked.

They'd just take the guys down to the rec room and

beat them repeatedly at chess

and then talk to them for hours about Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle

or the underlying social metaphors in the Aliens movies.

Buy stock in some hand cream companies

because there is about to be a major shortage.

And I'm not just talking about straight porn. Oh no.

There should be fuck films for my nerd brethren

of all sexual orientations.

Gay nerd porn flicks with titles like "Dungeons and Drag-queens."

Wade never 'proves' himself.

He never made a heroic sacrifice. Others sacrificed for him.
He never struggled his way to to top, he was automatically good at everything.
He didn't develop a relationship with Art3mis(Samantha), he stalked her into submission; by the end of the novel she had just found out IOI was about to murder her, and Wade acts like she owes him a relationship above all else.

The ONLY thing that separated him from anyone else in the entire OASIS was that he had an extra life from playing PACMAN.

This fuckin guy is reddit incarnate

This idea is a fucking gold mine.

I am gonna make millions,

because this country is full of database programmers

and electronics engineers

and they aren't getting the loving they so desperately need.

And you can help . . .

If you're an intelligent woman is interested in breaking into the adult film industry,

and if you can tell me the name of Luke Skywalker's home planet,

then you are hired.

It doesn't matter if you think you're overweight or unattractive.

It doesn't matter if you don't think you're beautiful.

You are beautiful. . .

And I will make you a star.

that actually sounds hot

As if nerd porn didn't already exist

There's 2 main things wrong with his ideas in this poem
1. That sort of porn already exists
2. Everything

I wonder what it's like to be so opinionated despite a complete lack of conciousness.

No fun allowed

I honestly couldn't fucking tell you but I don't think it is. Its my sibling's truck but he doesn't have a license so I drive it while my Trail Blazer is defunct

reddit!

Ready player one isn't fun though. It's an absolute slog despite its snappy prose.

reddit player one

LOL REDDIT AND Veeky Forums ARE TOTALLY DIFFERENT PLACES WITH DIFFERENT USERBASES YOU GAIS

But you can't deny that on average reddit has people with attributes that are like this.

I'm also half way in and the dialogues are some of the most cringy shit I have ever read.

It came from Joseph Campbell and was inspired by Jung's New Age garbage. In turn it inspired too many hack "artists" to count.
