In a shorter time span and in a war apparently of a much smaller scale (WWI) around 900.000 soldiers died. We were talking about WW1 originally. Germany won this war in the East (smacking Russia, Romania etc.). They lost in the West to countries mostly inhabited by what they later considered Aryans.

The most gruesome battles of WWI were unprecendetend in scale and carnage, and havn't been repeated on the same scale (thank god). Most wars only have a few awful meatgrinders, WWI has several, The Somme. Ypres. Verdun. Marne. Isonzo. etc. Did ever soldier in uniform see those battles? no. But that does nothing to make those battlefields less hellish.
