Because Southern whites (and many Northerners) were uncomfortable with the idea of blacks having equal rights, so soon after not even being considered full persons after they were freed. Many abolitionists in fact were pro-segregation. Because you can find the concept of slavery abhorrent and still not be pro-equal rights. In fact, true equal rights wasn't really a thing until the very late 19th century.

also, we're very tribal so anything slightly different from us make us unconfortable and suspicious at first glance - then one of two things happen: if the "new" people are self-conscious enough to know about this they will greet and meet the "old" people, if they're not and respond to suspicion with anger, then you'll have two factions that will fight each other until the end of times.

After the great migration greatly reduced the numbers of blacks within the south and national opinion began to corrode, southern whites decided to just copy what northerners have been doing moving to the all white suburbs and leaving the inner cities to rot in "multicultural" bliss.

the south has never been even remotely close to that level of blackness. It was essentially 25-30% at best and even then only a couple of state.
Segregation existed because southern whites, like all militaristic cultures, pratice "brahmin" hygiene. Lower castes, in this case blacks, need to be oppressed to keep the ruling castes "clean" and free of disease. Ironically southern whites have the highest rates of tobacco use, infectious disease, and parasite infestation of all white americans.
