I don't know why, but for some reason I find any sort of jewelry on man to be absolutely terrible 99% of the time. The only thing I think is acceptable would be like a small simple chain or one very simple ring. A nice watch is fine too. The guy in your pic OP looks like a complete douchebag with those rings on. Who could he possibly be trying to impress with gaudy skull rings and cheap fake diamonds and amethysts? Basically that picture was obviously from tumblr and that's where it should have stayed

Honestly its hard to beat the simple gold loop earrings. They look fairly classy without being showy. You want no more than a centimeter of space between your lobe and the bottom of the hoop, any more and you start looking like a sassy black girl.
Also appropriate is small jeweled studs, as long as the color of the metal and gemstone match your attire.

I don't think there really is any solid gold jewelry, because gold is too soft. I don't know much on the subject, but I'm pretty sure the higher the carat, the higher the gold content, but I'm pretty sure all gold jewelry is plated.
