What was the primary cause/event of the depopulation of Constantinople?

the 1204 sack by the godless franks

Ur mom farting

Did they kill literally hundreds of thousands of people or did most people just leave Constantinople after the sacking? I find the latter a lot easier to believe.

>massacre latins
>get sacked
I mean, you guys deserved it.

End of free annona.

after the sacking a 'latin empire' was set up ruled entierly by foreigners which then fought a series of wars with the empires former vassals which it lost leading to teh empire being re-established.

this took like 50 years and ruined large parts of the empire as well as screwing trade through the city, causing people to emigrate and basically totally fucking the whole place.

Even before the sack, the cities glory days were well behind it. The empire often struggled financially and the years following the Komnenois Dynasty were fraught with wastefulness and corruption. As a result, the cities infrastructure gradually deteriorated as its antiquated roads, sewers, and bridges were left to essentially rot. The filthy conditions that resulted were breeding grounds for plagues and illnesses that often killed large swaths of the population at a time. The very worst of these being the Black Death, which as we well know killed humongous amounts of people, and was one of the larger of many crippling blows that were dealt to a deteriorating empire.

>sack
You mean rightful repo?

plague

The loss of the imperial breadbasket, in particular Egypt and the recently reconquered Africa in the 7th century. With these provinces removed from imperial control, Constantinople was not only deprived of their substantial tax revenues but also the source of the bread dole that had artificially inflated the city's population. Something very similar can be seen with the city of Rome itself after the diversion of Egyptian grain to Constantinople.

Egypt was replaced with the Black Sea, which kept Constantinople's population well above 200,000 for centuries after the loss of Egypt and Africa.

Maybe if the Latins weren't cunts then there wouldn't be any massacre.

Maybe if the Byzantines weren't such economic failures they wouldn't need Latin ports.

Believe it or not, but being a cunt isn't a justification to murder them, especially by the tens of thousands and then sell them into slavery
I know the Orthodox have a difficult time understanding this since they aren't Christians

There were many contributing factors; but the primary reason was a sixth century outbreak of the bubonic plague.
I would recommend a book called Justinian's Flea, its beautifully written and delves further into the topic.

Believe it or not, standards were different back then, otherwise shit like the crusades would've never existed.

What massacre?

OY VEY REMEMBER THE 6 GORRILION LATINS

Touching the kids! Touching the kids!!!
Lol you fucking catholic scum suckers.

The empire could not keep up with Justinian's efforts and they had a lasting impact on the empire that it could not recover from. It's a miracle it somehow scrambled back together after the latin warriors sacked the city. It slowly lost it relevance and was no longer the center of the world after the kingdoms surrounding it became powerful.
