I'd like to share my personal theory on why society has degraded over time into the sorry state it is now.
Now the main problem I see with today's society is the unimaginable amount of selfishness and greed that has festered into everyone's hearts. Why is everyone so selfish and greedy is a combination of or current economic system, our government type, and technology.
Technology spurned humanity into a complete new age of industry and progress but it also opened up the way for those who did not have a position in the government to become powerful through currency alone, this would cause a major cultural shift in human society as whole and would set us on the path to promote the individual rather then the collective as the most important thing to the average person.

The main point I was getting to is that since the begging humanity has worked in groups to survive, we are scientifically proven to be social creatures, but today everyone treats each other with distrust and no one opens up because we have all been taught not to and to treat ourselves as if we can accomplish everything by ourselves. It's true that in the past there were different systems and such to keep people in line and in their place but back then people had a sense of unity that kept everyone together and even just 50 yeas ago you can see that families and communities were much closer and more tight knit then the average family or community now.

People felt more unity and were more loyal to their nation and family simply because they didn't know better. They felt more connected to their family because there was a very high chance of living with them in the house they were born for the rest of their life. They felt more connected to their nation because there was a very very high chance of them not knowing much about other cultures and not having a chance ever in their life to live in another country or speak regulary to foreigners. People felt more unity towards their local community because that's how it was: You're born into it, and chances are you're stuck with that community for the rest of your life.
