What's the point of any art?
High fashion at it's core is an art form. So my answer to your question would be simply to make the viewer think. Art nor fashion doesn't need to be aesthetically pleasing nor conventional in any sense of the word, it simply needs to make the viewer ponder the piece - I think that is the point of 'high fashion'
This is a biased answer though as I am involved in runway and live for this sort of stuff.

Haute Couture by it's very definition is the 'highest of high fashion' and is such an umbrella term. I think the question OP was asking was which particular couture designer is the most avant garde

I have a bush shirt like in the middle. It's all right but I think I'm going to sell it on for a size larger or the zip-up one.
Reason is the hood is a bit small. I asked them if the hood sizes increase with the shirt size: they do.

Any idea of what material was used here? Was this just a plastic balloon like thing or was this some insane fabric work?

the whole notion of "art as discourse" only comes from the university and its leaking out from there can have disastrous effects on a medium and the populace that consumes this. soviet socialist realism is "art as discourse" par excellence. much of it is brilliant, but the environment it created was suffocating for creativity.

I can't really say what the point of art is, and i agree with you to an extent that art is about provoking thought but this is too simple an answer I think.
