I was actually just thinking about this today. I was skating in a parking lot and was like wow I probably look whack as fuck right now because I'm not in obvious skater garb and I'm a casual skater anyway. But then I said fuck it. Know why? Because skating causes the clothes. The clothes do not make the skater. Skaters wear what they wear because they are/were functional and have been ingrained in the culture of skating. If you want to appropriate that, fine. But when someone asks if you skate based on your outfit and you're forced to awkwardly say "nah I just kinda push around and cruise" you're gonna feel like a dingus. So I'd say if you like skateboarding and actually do it and try to get better, sure wear the clothes. Otherwise you'll look cool but your demeanor and realness will not be there.

tl;dr don't be a poser but if you decide to be one be prepared to feel whack sometimes

In my opinion the skating fashion at the moment is simply skinny jeans or baggy jeans with a loose fitting t-shirt and really any skating shoes you want with a camp cap. But really skating fashion is laid back and you can dress anyway you want and that is skate fashion, just being lazy and not caring.

if you skate and don't want to look homeless, then mix some basic fashion trends with the function of traditional skate junk. Slim/tapered jeans or pants (I personally love the Levi's commuter collection, pretty tough stuff), shoes with basic colors (avoid big logos, I wore emerica almost exclusively when I used to skate), and tees that aren't too busy (again, no big logos, and nothing too tryhard).

This is a really cool fit, even though my gut tells me those pants don't go with the rest. Somehow it works.
